Have an older system running some essential programs that won't run on newer processors, so it's essential that I fix this. Every time I open Internet Explorer, the page loads, then the error message "Internet explorer has experienced a problem and needs to close" I tried repair IE, but no luck. I tried a "dirty" reinstall of WIN98SE, but no luck. I don't know how to roll back IE to a previous version, and because IE keeps crashing, I can't go to Windows update. The technical details of the error include:
Code 0xc0000005, Flags 0x0000000, Address 0x000000070f69d00.
Any help would be appreciated.

boot into safe mode by rebooting and pressing the F8 key as it is booting up ,
Then run scandisk full and check the box fix errors
or boot your machine into dos mode then at the c: prompt type: scandisk c:
and do a full surface scan" IF IT AINT BROKE - LEAVE IT ALONE "

Next you can try going to add/remove programs and click remove Internet explorer it should prompt you to repair or return to the previous version.

I've tried the repair feature on IE, but no dice, and the option to go back to previous version is greyed out. I think a critical update may have gotten corrupted, as the problem just started a few weeks ago. If I try scanreg/ restore or scanreg/fix, it won't boot up because the earlier versions of my registry are months old, and I have installed several programs since then. But I can't access the internet because of the IE crashes, and I don't know how to roll back IE to an earlier version. I'll try scandisk and let you know.

Hey Greg,
If scandisk doesn't work I have zipped you a temporary browser by email so you can download a fresh IE.

No luck. The browser gave me a similar message:
invalid page fault mshtmled.dll@017f: 70f69d00. I can access the drives through the network, so i may just have to save files and reformat from scratch.

I've been fathoming on this one but can't see any easy fix.
When you say you had no luck/no dice with IE repair I assume that the repair ran without error but the symptoms did not change. If there were any reports about file problems then let us know.
The lack of go-back (grayed out) is not rare, usually when you have at some time excercised the MS option to delete the backup files (I've done this, mine is the same).
It would be useful to know what IE version you are running and whether you have ever had a later version on this machine?
The reason for asking this is against the possibility that there might be IE files around for a later IE version. This could cause problems but I am unable to pinpoint which file(s) would cause your particular problem.
The only thing I can suggest (which depends on what version is installed) is to do a FULL download of either the same IE version or the next newer IE version onto another machine. Copy this to CD-R (finalized) then install it on your machine. The same or a newer version will run in fine, older versions won't.
This website gives various full versions (but the IE6.1 is unlikely to be the latest):
FULL IE VERSIONSThere are other ways to get full versions of IE6.1 but these are only suitable if you can get online with your present machine.
Let us know your IE version (in IE/Help/About). This might help in some way or other.

.... should have said, the SP2 versions, where shown on that link, have generally proved more reliable than their SP1 counterparts.

Try to see if any of these link could help you...
IE HAS TO CLOSE
Or these many links to try
MICROSOFT KB
" IF IT AINT BROKE - LEAVE IT ALONE "

Try #9 before my suggestion. It is always best to see if there is some simpler solution before reloading IE.

I'm running IE 6-point-something. I'll check in the morning when I return to work. Hopefully, one of the above suggestions will work. I'll post back in the morning.
Thanks

That's IE6.1 I believe.
The one on the link I gave was just IE6 and going backwards can be a problem. I'll scout around and see if there is anyway of downloading IE6.1 full file onto another machine.
Derek.W

You can get the full file downloaded by following the instructions here on any other machine:
You obviously select the one for W98 when asked (whatever the machine is that you are downloading on).
It's a big file so I hope you are on broadband. This is because it is not just the update extras needed on your own machine. It will run in fine without any need to delete your existing IE.

Hello, all. Well, I got lucky. turns out the slave drive was an old master drive that I never reformatted, and still had win98 on it. I swapped the drives, moved over the info, reformatted the old master and everything is fine. I appreciate the help.

In the future, if you or anyone else has this problem again, you can most likely solve it (if the disk is not corrupted, and a new install/repair does not work) by deleting all the plug-ins:
It's totally OK to delete all the plug-ins because if you visit a page that requires one, Explorer will just promp you to install a fresh version.
Deleting them is easy:
Go to the C:\Windows\Downloaded Program Files\ folder, and delete everything (you can right-click each item and choose "remove")
Do this with all IE windows closed. There is also no need to reboot, as plug-ins are unloaded with IE.
Once the folder is clear, Explorer will start magically working fine.
If this does not fix the problem, your IE is corrupt itself, and you must reinstall it, which is also easy.
=)
