Hello,
I was wondering what you thought of Internet Explorer 6.0 (or whatever the latest version is now); I currently have Internet Explorer 5.5. In conversations with a friend, he was suggesting I upgrade to Explorer 6.0, as he believes it's stabler than 5.5. I originally didn't because I heard that 6.0 had a lot of bugs in it and 5.5 was working well for me, but I was wondering what you thought of 6.0, if you've had any problems with it, if there are any great new features with it, etc., as I am considering upgrading to 6.0? Would you suggest I should or not?

Any advice, thoughts, and suggestions would be greatly appreciated! :-) Thank you!

Please take care and have a great weekend!

Sincerely,

Joe C.

Hi Joe. Actually, I've never used 6, but
I have used five sometime before in the
past. But seriously, I'm sure 6.0 has *tons*
of new bugs that you should stay away from.
This is microsoft were talking about. Just
get Opera web browser. It's fastest, best,
and leanest. I don't even know why people
waste their time with Internet Explorer, or
even Netscape. Do you get that screen that
says "Illegal Operation" a lot? Trust me,
if you get 6, I bet there'll be more!
But despite my trash talk about IE, I hope
this was useful to you.

I use 6, it suck's, MS still supports 5.5 sp2 so why upgrade if you don't have to. Yeah a lot of people say ditch it but IE with proper use gives the least headaches. IE will always display/open the page you want and properly. Mozilla and opera do not unless you know how to configure them 100%.

Upgrading @ MS' recommendation is usually not acurate. If you are working leave it. There are also some stories that 6.0 is too much for 98 using it now and seems to be ok. -just installed though, knock on wood.
The new features within 6.0 are usually just things compiled together with IE, codecs for media player ...etc...

Hope this helps. Try it, uninstall if unhappy.

I upgraded to IE 6 on my old hard drive and I haven't used it in quite a while; I haven't upgraded my browser since I got my new hd. Right now I am still using IE 5 that was installed with windows. Anyways, when I upgraded to IE 6, I double clicked on the IE installer and a message popped up saying that I have some file that needs to be upgraded (I forgot which one). The only option I had was to click "okay." The computer then rebooted and suddenly I couldn't open any windows applications, like my computer, windows explorer or internet explorer. Luckily I had netscape installed so I could get on the net with that. I downloaded the IE installer again, ran it from a floppy and it downloaded and installed alright. I don't know if you will receive the same message, or get some other problem, but if you decide to install IE6 maybe you should back up everything and have another browser installed just in case something goes wrong.

As for the browser itself, when I used it, it wasn't any buggier, or more stable, than IE 5 is. It still has the bugs that causes numerous crashes and such. I did read somewhere that IE 6 may actually slowly corrupt files in windows 95 and 98, though; but I don't know if this is true or not. I had problems with windows freezing in my old hd, but that may have been due to spyware/adware or some other issue, and not IE6 (though I know it wasn't a virus).

IE6.0 had bugs but IE6sp1 is good.
I used it on Win98FE and since upgraded to Win98SE.

There are a couple of differences between 5.5 and 6sp1 that I like but folks on dial up are not to happy with one of them. In earlier versions the page would load from top to bottom. With IE6sp1 you see nothing until the entire page is ready to be displayed and then the whole page is there.
On cable it don't matter but on dial up I can see where one might think it is not working.

With IE6sp1 it displays colored scroll bars on sites that have coded it to do so.

IE6sp1 has the cookies controls to not accept third party cookies.

It is my belief that IE6sp1 loads about 15% faster than IE5.

Should you upgrade? I don't know. If you are on dial up you may want to stick with what is working. If you are on DSL or cable then I'd say to go for it.

I have no troubles with it crashing but this machine has never had a virus and I don't use or install spyware magnet programs such as IRC, AIM or Kazaa. I have no Pop-up stopper programs and have no problems with pop-ups.

I tried Mozilla's Phoenix and Firefox and found them 'good' but didn't like the way their pages loaded like some kind of digitized artwork or something so went back to IE6sp1.

Regards,
Bryan

I don't rememeber having any problems on my old PII with IE6 and win98se. I have IE6 as soon as I got the machine built for me so it wasn't an upgrade or overinstall. Now that I ave the same things on this new machine I have problems but it may not be MS. It could be hardware so back to the shop it goes. I tell you though the shop warned me that I was going to have problems with what I wanted to install(win98se, IE6).

Running IE6 and all up to date, no crashes, no odd messages, no problems, runs fast and I'm on dial up.

It does not wait till the whole page is loaded as stated above, so ther must be something I have managed to tweak, I do run Cable-nut and have experimented with the settings, runs well.

3d party cookies are blocked, I have no pop up stoppers and no pop up problems.

Have tried a few of the other browsers, but end up back on IE6 due to poor performance, poor display or buggy messages.

Give it run, you can change back anytime if you have problems.

And avagoodweekend.

The last security update for IE55 SP2 was Feb 04, there will be no more.

That may be a reason ultimately to move to IE6, it is still supported.

Since I switched to wireless, the computer that I usually use is an older laptop...P1 266-MHz, (maxxed out at) 96-MB RAM, running Win98SE with all applicable Updates & IE 6 (also fully updated), on a DSL connection. I haven't noticed any problems at all since upgrading to IE 6, but then again, I never had any problems with IE 5.5 either. IE 6 was actually installed "accidentally" when I used the free Windows Update CD, but I haven't found any reason to go back to IE 5.5.

I, like Bryan, don't use any spyware-magnet programs, nor pop-up stoppers. I also have no pop-up problems.

I have been using IE6 since it came out, two or three mobo's back. At first there were some bugs, but they got fixed, I guess. I'm on dialup, have had no crashes and I don't get any popups, either. It got updated with the Windows Update CD, too. I recommend it. It's free. And you can always uinistall it if you don't like it. So far, I haven't found any reason to uninstall it.

Go for it. :)

Too many bugs with IE, and that`s not even bringing all the crashes it creates into the discussion.
This is the latest, and a more serious problem that alot of previous security holes in it.

Researchers warn of infectious Web sites

Security researchers warned Web surfers on Thursday to be on guard after uncovering evidence that widespread Web server compromises have turned corporate home pages into points of digital infection.

Get the new Firefox .9 browser. It autoblocks pop up ads, and has almost one hundred add-ons, dictionary, etc ,,all free. Plus it loads pages at least 1/3 faster than IE.

I'm not so sure that there are more bugs in IE than any other browser. It is quite possibly the reverse.

What it amounts to is that IE is attacked simply because it is most widely used. If some other browser were as popular it would probably fall on it's face in no time.

There may be a case for changing to another browser because of this but I suggest that the "bug ridden" assumption is false.
