I am using windows 98, and I have the following problem. When I try to connect to the internet following error message pops up. "Internet explorer caused invalid page fault in module MSVCRT.DLL At 0167:78003b44, and then it gives the rgistry details. I cannot get into the internet because of this problem. Please help me to resolve this problem. Don Patrick

Don,
There are a couple of methods you can try. The first requires your Win98SE CD, the next is an M$ fix.
It could be no more than an older version of MSCVRT.dll or corrupted files in M$ Visual Basic Studio 6.0 etc..
Go to Start->Run and type in sfc and hit OK. Leave it on the first option and let it scan. If it finds any files missing/corrupted, it may ask for the Windows CD.

There is nothing to learn from someone who already agrees with you.

Did this problem start after installing some new or updated software? MSVCRT.DLL is a Microsoft C Runtime Library and gets updated all the time. The version in your original Win98 cab files (Win98_63.cab) is 6.00.8397.0, while the version currently running on my Win98 computer is 6.10.8924.0, I'm sure it's been updated numerous times by software installation or update programs. Your problem may be something else entirely, but since that's where the error is currently pointing to it's as good a place as any to start. Here's a article from Microsoft about the problem:
http://support.microsoft.com/kb/q22...
but, it's not clear if Microsoft will provide an updated DLL for Win98, they want you to upgrade to Vista. But, by searching the Internet under MSVCRT.DLL, you can find a source. Just copy the current MSVCRT.DLL that's in your WINDOWS\SYSTEM directory to some place as a backup and try replacing the DLL and see if that helps the problem. If your lucky and it fixes the problem, then after checking that it didn't mess up any other programs you should delete the copy you made for backup, and prehaps even copy the working MSVCRT.DLL to the sysbackup directory in case of future problems.

Ignore this response (just realised that what I was about to say had already been covered).

Derek, good to see you back, thought you'd abandoned CN. :)
Learning is done by repetition.
Sometimes You have a way of clearing up uncertainty. Should have posted

Dumbob
Ran a SFC.It just gave details of checked files. NO action indicated.Problem still bothers. Any more things to do about this problem. I do not have Win 98 CDDon Patrick

Re #4. Thx for compliment but if I'm back it's only in a very small way....
What I was about to add was that when you use sfc to restore a file it will put back the very first version that was installed with W98. As it is sure to have been updated (maybe due to a later IE version) this action could cause more problems than it fixes.
I then realised that #2 pretty well covered this (and a bit more) and I think the course of action suggested in that response is the best way forward. It is not impossible that I have one or more versions of that file around (which I could send) but it might be best if you indicated the IE version you are using in case that makes some difference. It would also be worth clarifying whether you are using Win98 first edition or W98SE, and the file version of MSVCRT.DLL you have onboard at present.
some other bloke...

Ran SFC again, and found the following file has been currpted.
File: setupx.dll
Location: C:\\WINDOWS\SYSTEMI am using windows 98 second edition, and I found a CD.
I am trying to restore this file using the CD,and will report the results.Thanks.Don Patrick

Be very careful using SFC. See posts 2, 3 & 4 here:
http://www.computing.net/windows95/...
Note this in particular:
"setupx.dll - SFC can extract wrong version (W98 first edition only)."EDIT: Sorry, I hadn't noticed where you said you were using W98 "SE".
In which case setupx.dll is not a big issue (as per post #9).some other bloke...

Setupx.dll file is often targeted for replacement by a process that is essentially wrong in that there really is nothing wrong with your current setupx.dll file, but there is also no harm done in replacing the current file anyway, IF you use the correct one that is. Since you are 98se and setupx.dll is in your PRECOPY2.CAB have at it. WinZip works fine for this kind of work BTW.
Please note that all links given so far for a proper canidate for a replacement MSVCRT.DLL file are dead ends so far.
So please make a note of this tested one with version 6.00.8797.0
