I am trying to connect to a new Internet connection which i have on my old computer. The trouble is when i try to connect it dials up on the modem then tells me am i sure the modem is connected or if someone is on the other line???

I share the connection with my father who has the main connection point downstairs. We have two lines one for the internet and a second for telephone calls or a second internet connection if were both online.

Neither of us are online when we connect, the numbers and password logins are all correct. I have never used the internet on the new computer so its not old connection. So what can the problem be?

Does your modem show in device manager and indicate it is woking properly? If so, GO TO: Internet Explorer> Tools> Internet options> Connections> Setup> Follow the prompts from there. If your modem isn't working or has a yellow exclamation mark next to it, you need to properly install the modem. Easiest way is to remove and reboot. Win98 should try to install the modem. you may need to supply the drivers for the modem.

I think the jack wiring is wrong. Sometimes people will take a short cut and connect 2 lines to a single jack and then use a duplex plug to split them into 2 different lines. If this is the case then try a 2-line duplex adaptor to see if this will work. If they are on two physically separate wall jacks then I don't know what else to do.

May also have something to do with TCP/IP connection. I had nearly same problem going online over a new LAN connection.
