I have a 56K USB Viking modem w/ Windows 98SE. For some unknown reason, when I try to disconnect from the internet using the icon in the taskbar, a small red circle w/ a x inside shows up un the icon and my computer freezes. The modem has disconnected, but somehow the computer doen't know that. It's really annoying. Never had that problem before. Help!!!

Do you use some download accelerator like Go!Zilla or GetRight or something comparable. I've got a similar problem when using Go!Zilla. I don't think it has anything to do with the modem. How much RAM have you got?

I have 128 Megs and no, I don't use any accelerator programs. I've never had that problem before so I don't know if it's the new motherboard or 98 Second Edition doing it... Any help appreciated.

I have the same prob. about once a month. Win95, 96MB ram, US Robotics 56K, Spacewalker mothrbrd, no accelerator programs. It's a mystery I've been living with. Good luck!

I sudden developed freeze up when closing programs toward then end of the day when I was ready to shut down. It also includes disconnecting from the Internet.

For some reason I could open and close programs all day, but when it came to the end of the day when I would decide to call it a day my system would freeze up when I started to close programs that were working off of my internet connection, such as LiveGrab and Netscape. I would try closing the Internet connection first and still my system would freeze up.

This was a newly acquired problem that somehow developed, can not remember the last thing I did before this event started to happen. The problem is now fixed, and all I did was install the FREE internet service called "Freei Networks". After I installed this ISP on my system my Internet disconnection system freezing went away, who'd figure. This install was from the FREE CD they sent me, I don't know if the download will give the same effect. Be aware that the free download they offer can take a long time since it includeds MSIE 5.0.
