I have a HD onto which I loaded Win98 se (amongst other OSs, using boot magic). I set up an internet connection using a modem to get to NetZero, BlueLight, and AOL, and was able to connect to the internet just fine. I took this HD out of the computer, and put it into another computer which has a direct internet connection through a LAN. I was not able to get to the internet, but after removing the internet connections, dial up networking, and network device drivers, and setting up a new configuration, and reinstalling them, I was able to get to the internet using the LAN. Later, I pulled that HD out, and put it back into my original PC with the modem. I tried the same trick, but ran into problems. First I had a problem reinstalling AOL's DUN/RAS. Then I had a problem installing AOL. After several tries and removing some apps (e.g Net2Phone, MS FastFind), it seemed to work. Once I reinstalled everything, I was able to use NetZero to dial out on the modem, it said verifing user & password, and then finally failed to connect to the NetZero server, and told me to try again later. I tried on another HD on the same machine, and it worked fine. The same thing happened when I tried to connect to using AOL. It dialed out, got the account numbers for my area code, connected to something, verified my password, and then failed to establish the connection (Error: connection refused by host). It tried the second number on my list, and just hung there for 10 min, until I hit the reset button.
