Comment:

Greetings! I have a P1, 98M of ram, on W98 that keeps dropping the Internet connection about every 9 to 11 minutes. The modem is an Intel 536EP V.92 I have to restart the node everytime because it refuses to reconnect. This is what I have done so far (not in order): I have called SBC and had my phone line checked for static interference; line’s ok. Updated modem driver with current version (01.2005), Reinstalled Winsock (32 and 16 bit) using SFC, checked all hardware including cabling. Ran modem diagnostic; checked ok. Tried several scripts ISP had for this type of modem, negative results. I’m running out of options here. What sayth the wise counsels? Thank you in advanced.

Yes, I did. That's how I got the scripts for the modem. In fact, I have two ISPs (got another thinking that the first one was of questionable quality. Not so. Still had same problems).

Depending on the speed, P1's have a tendency to be "borderline" on WinModem (also known as HSP or "Software" modems) support. I've always had problems with anything less than 166MHz supporting a 56K WinModem and I would recommend at least 200MHz for anyone using one. Since the principal behind them is to "steal" clock cycles from the CPU in order to work, there has to be enough cycles there to support them:

TRA,
Thanks for the advice. I installed an old US Robotics 33.6 Telepath modem (TI chipset). It took (BTW this driver is extremely hard to find online) and still after approx 10 minutes, it stops sending and recieving. Funny thing, it doesn't close the port. It acts like it's still connected. When trying to reconnect, it refuses to send or recieve ONLY until I reboot the PC. Then it's good for another 10 minutes.

Suggestions?

SOLUTION:

As crazy as it sounds: I have Zone Alarm as a fire wall. It was shutting my connection down every ten minutes and refusing to allow a reconnect. I reconfigured the firewall and now it's doing fine so far.

Thanks everyone for your help.

Glad to hear it worked out OK. Wouldn't have thought of a firewall (I've never used one since I only have dial-up and it's slow enough). Is that working with the 33.6 or 56K modem?...
