My PC (Win 98) at office has a LAN Internet connection. For quite some time it is facing a peculiar problem. The speed of the Internet is quite good. However, the problem is that it often gets disconnected on its own. Whenever, we start IE6, it takes too much time in opening and, most of the time, it shows the message “The page can not be displayed’ /can not find server. However, when I click on the refresh button, it opens the webpage. Similarly, in between any browsing session, the Internet gets disconnected and whenever I click on refresh button, it again gets connected. The PC is connected to a hub which support two more PC (other than mine). There seems to be no problem with other PCs. The Internet connection on these two PCs never gets disconnected. Since the Internet is coming through the same hub and since two other PCs on the same hub are working perfectly there appears to be something wrong with my PC. Earlier the PC was working alright.. Now it has started showing this problem.

I would look at the lines feeding the Internet to the computer. It sounds as if there are frayed or have bad ends on them some place.

A long shot, but have you tried IE repair?
Copy this into the Run box and hit Return to get the option:
rundll32.exe setupwbv.dll,IE6Maintenance
