I have windows 98 Second Edition installed on my system . I also have Road Runner Cable modem internet connection.
Everything on my system has been working fine till last few days.

My system boots normally as before. But when I launch internet explorer it takes a lot of time to load the page.
Similarly when I open the Disk explorer , the list of files appear very slowly . But other applications that I
select from START->PROGRAMS run very fast as they do normally .

If I disconnect cable modem (USB port on my system) then DISK explorer works normally . Of course I can not
connect to Internet .

But then I got an idea , I booted the machine with disconnected cable modem. I checked the disk explorer .
It worked with normal speed . Then I started internet explorer ,it gave me page not found error
quickly (which was expected because cable modem is not connected) .
Then I connected cable modem to my system and refreshed the same internet page.
It worked with great speed as it used to .

But if I try to open a new internet window , it opens very slowly .
Same thing with disk explorer, any new window opened after cable modem was connected, becomes very very slow.

I installed netscape 6.2 . It works properly .
That confirms that Road runner is working properly with its original speed.

But Disk explorer continues to work slowly.

I have checked virus with latest updates of Norton's Antivirus 2002.
I have removed the internet cache and temporary files.
I have reinstalled Road Runner and Internet explorer Software too .
Using winipcfg I have released and renewed the IP address too .

But the problem still persists.

Can anyone please help me in solving this problem .

thanks for reading

Under the skin internet explorer and windows explorer are the same app. I could be wrong about this but from what I have read in the trade journals Road Runner was bought out by another company (I think AT&T) Since then performance has been crap. People have been ditching Road Runner in large numbers. You may want to consider another ISP.

Under the skins they AREN"T the same app.
One is Explorer.exe and the other is Iexplore.exe.
They share a lot of common dlls etc to give a similar look and feel, but they certainly are not the same app.

Finally I had to re install windows 98 .
Internet and windows explorer work perfectly with great speed.

I don't think Road Runner was causing that problem .
