Did you make sure you had disabled the firewall before trying to uninstall it?

also check msconfig> startup and uncheck spf files in menu SmcService values, and restart, then uninstall, or delete folder and files, and clean in registry as well, manually or using regcleaner. :)

OK fine.
It's a bit of an odd one. Maybe there's a Sygate forum that can help.
Otherwise it seems you are stuck with trying to find the files and delete them, then remove the registry entries. If the Sygate folder is still there in Program Files then the date/time it was installed might help you find any other files.
Not easy and you have to be very careful, so see if anyone has any better ideas first.

My #4 overlapped with #3.
Do you use Windows Installer? I don't use it myself or know much about it but it seems that error message might be something to do with it. Maybe worth a thought.

did uncheck all files something to do with symantec in msconfig>startup, and then tried unsinstalling again, but still the same. Do you think it is a good idea to manually delete it? will regcleaner will automatically fix the registry? thanks so much for all the replies ...

Normally I wouldn't recommend manual deletes but I don't think you have a lot of choice.
It's hard to say for certain if Regcleaner will find everything but it is quite a safe program. Beats attempting to remove them all manually.
The locations for anything that stays in msconfig or CP/Add-Remove are well known, so it's not much of a problem if they should stay behind.
If you are happy in the registry you could search it afterwards for "Sygate" (without quotes). Might be worth searching Files & Folders for Sygate too just in case there is some other folder around somewhere.
