There's no real reason to use 622 if your goal is to install Win98 - get yourself a Win98 boot disk and start the computer with that.

Likely you need to change the boot order so that the floppy drive is the first boot device (from the CMOS)

We've heard that a million monkeys at a million keyboards could produce the complete works of Shakespeare; now, thanks to the Internet, we know that is not true

Stick around. You probably need to change the boot order. TO enter the bios,

START WITH the machine OFF

HOLD and CONTINUE to hold "F1"

WHILE STILL HOLDING "F1", turn on the machine

This should get you into "easy setup"

If you need drivers, they might not be available at IBM--now Lenovo--but some drivers might be there listed under similar machines---for example, some of the drivers for the now very old 360XX series can be found listed under the 755 series. Not all that stuff is still at IBM/Lenovo

There is another place "greyghost" that has archived many of the old files

There's some good info here:

http://forum.thinkpads.com/index.php

and this:

http://greyghost.dyndns.org/pccbbs/

is the list for the greyghost site. There's a large text file at the top of the list--be sure to read that.

You are aware that the files downloaded from bootdisk.com etc. are not (themselves) bootable, right?

You must run the executable file in order to create the actual bootdisk

If you have a microsoft win98SE install CD, it should be bootable.

Run the file that you downloaded and it will create a bootable floppy.

But if you have a win98se CD, just boot it up.

Let's not start this again. Not all 98 cd's will boot

ONLY the OEM cd's will boot so far as I know.

If the thing won't boot from the floppy, either the disk is hosed, improperly made, or the floppy drive is screwed up. There are a few other ways, one is to get an IDE hdd cable adapter

That kind of falls under TMI

There's some sort of policy here wrt helping with illegally downloaded software

(I think we're against it)

Not all Win98 CD's automatically boot from CD. Fact. I've got one. Case closed.

Well, yeah - 'name' has established that (over & over again) - I for one, believe him.

OK - in my own {cough} 'limited' experience with those kinds of downloads, it would have been described as a 'bootable ISO' (or other CD image)

Regardless, whether it boots or not, you can always use a boot diskette (which we've kind of covered)

Some guides here

Unless the floppy drive is defective, which it may well be in this case.

Hmmm, thanks GXI, I stand corrected. Every Win98SE CD I have seen was bootable. I guess they must have all been late models.
Well, it's a good day, I learned something new.

I even sat down one day with "ISO BUSTER" and opened a whole bunch of CD's to see what they "looked" like. I have several store bought copies--which may have come about at about the same time---of W98FE and SE. NONE of these store bought retail copies are bootable.

ALL OEM copies I have will boot.

None of the upgrades will

765L will not boot from a CD with any operating system. Must boot from a floppy. Need to set for booting from floppy 1 or floppy 2 (external or internal). I was able to get NT4 installed. Was able to download video driver from IBM.
