Comment:

i have a dual boot with msdos7.10 (wengier) and windows xp. i have wfw 3.11 in the msdos partition
since my hardware is not 100% upto what is required for xp it is somewhat slow.also i rarely use many of the advanced features available in it.
so i use wfw ,which is much faster, for my wordprocessing and other day to day tasks.
but with a winmodem i am compelled to use xp to connect to the internet
though i am not interested in win95, i tried to install it (win95 original which comes in 13 floppies) in the msdos partition because my modem has drivers that work with win95
but the setup gives an error message saying that there is an operating system installed that cannot be upgraded with this version of win95
i know this might be because msdos 7.10 is hacked from win 98.
any suggestions how to get around this situation ?
i do not wish to install any version of windows above win 95 original ( don't want to clutter my harddisk with stuff i may never use )

Ditch MS-DOS/W3/W95 and install just W98SE Full Version, you have no older compatible hardware:

Weinger DOS is a BOOTLEGGED version and is PIRATED SOFTWARE:

I'm with you on not cluttering up.

But since the main motivation for this install is the winmodem, keep on mind that the DUN in early 9x was very buggy.

If at first you don't succeed, you're about average.

Sure, the version of Win95 that came on floppies actually precedes the 'A' version and is pretty bare bones - nevertheless, upgrading the DUN is not the issue at the moment.

I suppose the question might be, how is the machine being started in order to run Win95 setup? It needs to be installed on drive C: - which might vary, depending on boot choices and partitioning schemes etc.

If I had this much trouble installing Windows, I would have likely taken up golf instead
