Subject: Installing windows in a smaller partition using a recovery disk
Comment:

I am trying to set up a Compaq Presario 4112 so that it will run both a Japanese and an English operating system (Windows 95), one in each partition.

I have managed to create the partitions OK, but the only copy of W95 English I have comes on the Compaq recovery disk. When I partition and set the English drive to C: and the second one (for the Japanese OS) to D:, then try using the recovery disk to install W95 English onto the C: partition, the recovery disk takes on a mind of its own and dumps all my partitioning, giving me only an English system and one partition only.

Does anyone out there have any tips for a non-tech whiz to use a recovery CD-ROM to restore or load the English system onto the partition space only? I don't want to have to go out and buy Windows 95 all over again.

Any tips much appreciated.

Thanks,
Jane

It's a long process installing 2 operating systems the way yar want them to run.

In essence yar gotta create another primary partition as well as the usual one and an extended partition.

Then yar gotta hide the new primary partition so all yar see is C drive - the one yar first made, and
the D (an so on) drive - the logical drives yar made inna the extended partition.

Install English windows to the C drive an make sure it's OK an working.

Then, cos Windows WON'T easily boot two type of the version yar gotta trick it a bit.
So yar hide the partition - the C drive - that English windows is on and UNHIDE the other primary partition. The blank one - the second primary partition yar made.
So what yar now see is a C drive with nothing on an D, E an so on drives with some info (if yar put some on earlier). Yar can't see the partition with English windows on - it's still there - just hiding.

Install Japanese windows on the empty C drive an check it works.

Does? K

To make access to each version of windows easy, use a boot manger - Bootmagic from PowerQuest is about the easiest to setup and use - looks a bit like windows stuff an yar can use a mouse.
All the boot manager does is wait till yar start yar computer then jump up an say - "Time ta choose - English windows or Japanese windows?"

Make yar choose an yar away.

By placing each version of windows on a primary partition and hiding the primary partition when yar not using that version of windows serves a few purposes.

1. Windows don't easy share with another version when yar installing it.

2. Windows 9x won't easily dual boot with anuffa version of 9x.

3. By hiding each version of windows yar can't get confused when yar gotta work files, or install a proggie. Makes it a bit easier to look for problems.

Sides - English application software is different to japanese an yar better seperating the application as well as the operating software.

There are limits - most important is the startup files for each operating hafta be located within the first 2Gb of the first hard drive.

eg
1st primary = 1Gb = English windows
2nd primary = 1Gb = Japanese windows
Total size = 2Gb
is OK

1st primary = 2Gb = English windows
2nd primary = 1Gb = Japanese windows
Total size = 3Gb
is not.
