I have a 500cdt and have formatted useing a bootdisk with dcrom support but the d: drive is not reading the windows cd so I can install(tried win98se and win95b). I was getting an error but now that I tried to install via the external floppy drive(win95)the error is now "Invalid system disk-Replace the disk and then press any key". I don't know what disk they mean unless it is because I disconnected the floppy drive(external)? But what difference does that make and what use is it? I couldn't seem to install windows when it was connected.

Watch the screen...chances are D is not the letter designated to the CD-ROM drive...it could be E or if the boot floppy was dowloaded from bootdisk.com, the letter is probably R

Man!
The error message you are getting indicates the system is trying to boot and that there is nothing it can find to boot to
No floppy, or bad disk, or not a bootable diskNo bootable CD, or the CDROM or motherboard is not new enough to support booting, or the bios does not have the CDROM in the boot order
And last, the HD, being formatted will not boot.
Next, sounds like you need to figure a way to get the machine to boot AND LOAD the DOS mode CDROM drivers.
I don't know anything about that machine. Is there support at the factory website?
Look down through earlier posts right here. There are many relating to loading DOS mode CDROM drivers when trying to start up laptops.
Also, what are you using (the exact type) for a Windows CD?
NONE of the Winblows95 CD's will boot.
So far as I know the ONLY Windoz98 CD's that will boot are the so called "OEM" cd's which say "to be supplied only with a new PC" on the front --or--
Special factory "restore" type cd's usually boot.

To make the hard drive bootable, startup with a Win98 boot floppy and at A:\> prompt type Format C: /S. If the hard drive is already formatted, type SYS C:
Copy these four files to the C: drive
mscdex.exe
atapicd.sys
config.sys
autoexec.bat
If your bootdisk does not contain atapicd.sys you can download one here that does.
AUTOEXEC.BAT needs only this line C:\MSCDEX.exe /D:MSCD001
CONFIG.SYS needs only this line DEVICE=C:\ATAPICD.SYS /D:MSCD001
Mscdex.exe and atapicd.sys is on the boot disk.
Autoexec.bat and Config.sys can be edited by using Notepad. If you are using a different cdrom driver than atapicd.sys, then edit the Config.sys file accordingly.
When you boot up with the cd rom pack in place, the cd drivers will be accessed from the hard drive and your cd rom will be drive D:
Note: As the computer boots watch carefully to determine the drive letter assigned to the cdrom. It could be D: if a Ramdrive is not loaded by the bootdisk or E: if a Ramdrive is loaded by the bootdisk. Some bootdisk will also assign the cdrom R:.
Here is another method you could use. It is not necessary to perform the method above along with this one.For those of you not familiar with copying files in DOS or editing the config.sys and autoexec.bat files I have added the information below to further assist you.
Download boot.zip
Unzip the files to a blank floppy.
Restart the computer using the bootdisk.
You will get the following error messages:
The following file is missing or corrupted C:\Cd1.sys There is an error in your config.sys file on line 1 A:\>C:\mscdex.exe /D:Mscd001 Bad command or file name
Do not be concerned with the above errors and continue to step 4.
At the A:\type sys c: Press Enter
You should see the following message:
System Transferred
At the A:\>type install Press Enter
You should see the following:1 file(s) copied
1 file(s) copied
1 file(s) copied
1 file(s) copied
Shutdown the computer and swap out the floppy with the cdrom.
Restart the computer without the bootdisk.
Insert the Win98 CD.
At the C:\>type D: Press Enter
At D:\>type setup Press Enter
If you are perfoming this on a Toshiba Laptop use the instructions below.
Download Toshboot.zip
Follow steps 2-10 in the procedure directly above this.

jam-The letter was d. Now that doesn't appear. New problem now! Now I don't remember where I got the bootdisk from....is listed in the above reply(that is me that posted but it was taking too long!!!).
Name-well I intend to ring Toshiba 2morrow as I am getting sick of this problem. I have tried using win98se(cd), win95b(cd) and win95 on floppies via the external floppy drive(the error was saying that it wasn't able to install it because of something I don't remember or understand but it got further than the cd's). I really don't know what a factory restore cd is. I am also not sure what you mean about a cd supplied with a new pc either. I sort of understand but not fully!
Name-This is not a swappable cd/floppy situation. The cd drive is internal and the
floppy drive is external.Sounds like the other instructions are what I read up about before and not everything was exactly as stated. Made it very confusing and incorrect.
"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso, HH the 14th Dalai Lama

Well I tried the Krystyna thingy but the drive letter thing didn't happen. Then when I did sys c: then enter...that bit worked but not install. It says "bad command or file name".
I edited the files as stated but there error came up but was different inwording to what is stated in Krystyna post.
Now trying the Toshiba disk at the end of the page."The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso, HH the 14th Dalai Lama

Well I got down to the part where I should be able to install windows from the cd and I am back to the same error. "cdr101:Not ready reading drive E
Abort, retry, fail?"
I do r for retry but the error continues...."The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso, HH the 14th Dalai Lama

"" I really don't know what a factory restore cd is. I am also not sure what you mean about a cd supplied with a new pc either""
What I mean by a factory restore CD is that some laptops came with "special" CD's--these won't say anything about microsoft and so on--they will say something to the effect "this cd will install all original software, etc....."
On some older machines, these CD's DO NOT BOOT
Neither do Windows 95 cd's
Neither do MOST "store bought" ---known as "retail" versions of Windows 98
So far as I know the ONLY cd's that will boot, newer than 95---are the "OEM" versions of 98 THESE WILL SAY right on the front of the cd---"to be supplied only with a new PC" or words to that effect. If the cd does NOT say something to that effect, then it was a "retail" or "store bought" CD and probably won't boot.
This condition MAY be different in different parts of the country or the world, or for newer/ older CD's because there seems to be some arguement as to whether '98 "retail" cds will or will not boot.
I have several copies of '98 that are retail that I've picked up over the years, and NONE of them will boot.
NOW, as to your comment:
""cdr101:Not ready reading drive E
Abort, retry, fail?"""
This is starting to sound like a bad CDROM drive--or dirty--and would explain, IF IF IF any of your cd's are supposed to be bootable--why in fact they won't
Another possibility is that you are loading an incompatible driver from the floppy.

Uh, listen, have you tried these drivers?
Might be a trick to figure a way to put them on floppy....
http://www.csd.toshiba.com/cgi-bin/tais/su/su_sc_dtlViewDL.jsp?soid=106086&moid=1073769784&BV_SessionID=@@@@0058785985.1127401987@@@@&BV_EngineID=ccciaddfkemhidkcgfkceghdgngdgmm.0&ct=DL

Here's the text file from the above drivers. It "install" program is misleading. It doesn't really "install" the drivers, it just copies a selected driver to the HDD, and gives you no choice about where to put them.
You can try modifying your floppy you have already made to try different drivers.
What I did, was, download the file posted above (called "toscdrom.exe") and copied it to a "boot" floppy.
Make a directory (folder) on the floppy called "toscdrom" and copy the file there
This is a basic "boot" floppy made my calling "format /s" which copies the system files to the floppy.
Copy the downloaded file to this floppy, and reboot TO THE FLOPPY.
from A:\ type "toscdrom\toscdrom" and hit the {ENTER} key.
The file should extract the drivers, and you should have:
(THIS IS A QUOTE from the readme file)
"README.TXT 08-18-1998 CDC
Toshiba DOS CD-ROM drivers for internal IDE CD-ROM drives
==============================================================================This archive contains the following files:
README.TXT This file
README.COM Self-displaying version of this file\20X\TOSCDROM.SYS DOS CD-ROM driver v3.11 for all 20X and lower speed
CD-ROM drives (including SelectBay drives).
\10X\TOSCDROM.SYS DOS CD-ROM driver v3.03 for 10X SelectBay CD-ROM
(43x, 510, 520, 530, 660, 730X, 740)
\6X\TOSCDROM.SYS DOS CD-ROM driver v3.00g for 6X SelectBay CD-ROM

\4X\TOSCDROM.SYS DOS CD-ROM driver v2.16 for 4X SelectBay CD-ROM
(40x, 41x, 70x)
\2X\TOSCDROM.SYS DOS CD-ROM driver v2.01 for 2X T215xCD CD-ROM==============================================================================
INFORMATIONThe CD-ROM drivers included in this electronic archive are for use with MS-DOS
and/or Microsoft Windows 3.x. They are not required or recommended for use
with Windows 95 (except to have access to your CD-ROM drive in Win95's MS-DOS
mode). The included INSTALL.exe file will help you copy the correct version of
TOSCDROM.SYS for your computer. INSTALL will ask you which drive you have
(2X, 4X, 6X, 10X or 20X) and will copy the appropriate driver to the root
directory of your C: drive. When INSTALL is complete, you will need to modify
your DOS CONFIG.SYS and AUTOEXEC.BAT files as described below.
==============================================================================
Usage:The CD-ROM driver loads as a device driver in your DOS CONFIG.SYS file
DEVICE=TOSCDROM.SYS /D:TOSCD001
When this driver loads successfully, it sets up a DOS device name of
"TOSCD001" for your CD-ROM drive. You'll need to load the Microsoft CD-ROM Extensions in your AUTOEXEC.BAT file
as well. MSCDEX.exe is usually located in the \WINDOWS directory.IF EXIST TOSCD001 MSCDEX /D:TOSCD001 /M:10 /L:[drive letter]
where [drive letter] is the desired drive letter for the CD-ROM drive. If the
drive letter is not specified, the drive letter for the CD-ROM drive will be
the next drive letter available for mapping. The /D:TOSCD001 parameter tells MSCDEX which CD-ROM device to look for.
**end**
Now all this sounds complicated, but, really, take your boot disk, and follow Krystyna's instructions above where she says:
. If you are using a different cdrom driver than atapicd.sys, then edit the Config.sys file accordingly.
In other words, pick the appropriate driver from the toshiba program you just went through, copy it to your floppy you are trying to use, and edit the config.sys to fit the file name. You can do that in a Windows machine, easily, with notepad.what I'm thinking, here, is that either you have the wrong CDROM driver, or that you've got a bad/ dirty CDROM drive.

name-yes I rang Toshiba today and thye did suggest that the dc drive may have been faulty but i have also been told that on another machine that has the same problem that it is the Virtual memory that is the problem. Funny thing is today I was able to install win95 on another Toshiba laptop that had the same error. Persistance seems to pay off. That old laptop was sitting there for ages and I tried so many things on it.
Having only bought one new computer in my life I think you mean the cd's that come with it to install the software for all the hardware like sound drivers, hd, display etc. I have never had the software come with any 2nd hand pc or laptop so I struggle in the dark sometimes.
The cd's of windows that I have are copies of the originals and I do not remember what happened to my originals. I made copies just in case and I am glad I did. I don't remember what was written on the front but I was able to get the win95b cd to work with the other laptop today so I am happy about that!
Yes I think I am looking at an incompatibility issue with the driver of the cd rom. How do you clean a cd drive anyway? I keep my disc's nice and clean but i am not sure what the former owner was like.
I do have those drivers in preparation. I guess I instal them after I install windows as I have done with the other laptop I was referring to. Oops that cd rom driver is for 3.1. I think I have one for win95?"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso, HH the 14th Dalai Lama

There is also another driver on that same website for the cd rom. It is an update(on the 2nd page). Maybe that one would be better. What is OS/2?
"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso, HH the 14th Dalai Lama

No you don't want OS2--that was an operating system that was "meant" to compete with Microshaft--even though underneath it all, it was based on some of Microbill's orginial "stuff", and of course we all know that "Bill" didn't write the original "DOS", either
!!!OH!!!
"copies of the originals"
Many CDROM drives WILL NOT READ a "burned" cd---My mind is getting lame, but I think my Thinkpad 380xd, which was approx a P II --266 mhz machine, and would run either W98, NT-4, or Winddoz 2000-- would NOT read a "burned" CD--only a factory CD
This is a known problem on some older machines, so you might just want to round up a factory made CD--not a copy
By the way, I don't know your feelings about eBay, but you can buy Windows 98 pretty cheap there lately.
Here's the search pages for '98:
http://computers.listings.ebay.com/Windows_Windows-98_W0QQfclZ3QQfromZR13QQftsZ2QQsacatZ41884QQsocmdZListingItemList
Here's an example of "retail" '98, and so far as I know, this version won't boot from the CD:http://cgi.ebay.com/MS-Microsoft-Windows-98-SE-Second-Edition-Full-Retail_W0QQitemZ7184778197QQcategoryZ41884QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
Here's one example of an "OEM" version:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Microsoft-Windows-98-Second-Edition-CD-Sealed-Booklet_W0QQitemZ7184728951QQcategoryZ41884QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
If you had your original CD, it would say right on the front, "To be distributed only with a new PC"THE ABOVE "OEM" versions of '98 (not 95) WILL BOOT in a machine that supports that function
So far as I know, the only "tricky" disadvantage to using the "OEM" version, is that you have to fiddle to do an upgrade from W3x or W95. You have to fiddle with renaming a folder and so on. I NEVER do an upgrade, always a clean install, so to me that is not a problem.
So far as the driver being for Windows 3.1 or '95, that is really a misnomer. The driver for W3x is REALLY a DOS mode driver--and that is what you want for starting the install--because DOS is what you are using.
The driver for W9x is exactly that--to be loaded WHEN windows is up and running. That is an issue you may or may not need to deal with, because Windows may or may not load the correct drivers as it installs.
An example of how complicated this can be, is, that if I was to make a "standard" startup disk by using most any Windows 98 (not 95) machine, the CDROM drivers that would be on that floppy by default would work to start myOld Ascentia 266 laptop--and read the cdrom
Thinkpad 600X, which is about a P-500mhz machine, and would load the CDROM drivers.
MIGHT work on my old Thinkpad 380X
Would NOT work on my old Thinkpad 750/755/ 360xx series machines
In the last case, I'd have to go to IBM, as you did to Toshiba, and "build" a sort of custom boot disk to operate the cdrom.
What I'm trying to tell you is, it "aint" always easy.

Yes I can see now that it is not that easy but I have found it easier with desktops than with laptops which is all new to me. I did buy a win98se cd from Ebay a month ago but unfortunately left it in someones care and it was never returned. I don't know which type it was except that it had never been used before and was sealed with key. The copies of win95 and win98 that I have well I don't know what the originals had on them as neither of the things you mentioned ring a bell. For some reason though the copy of win95 did install on my Toshiba 430cds yesterday.
Thanks for all that other info as I was wondering what quite a few of those things meant! Have Slackware on another machine that I will learn eventually so I can give windoz the heave ho! The laptops are for people that are not so into computers like me.
Yeah I have noticed upgrades are tricky and I prefer a clean install too.
When I rang Toshiba they said to go to Bootdisk.com which is where I went first.
Well anyway might start from scratch and see what I missed. I know that when it comes to the partition part of using the 1st floppy I skip it as I was told on a small hd not to do it. Unless there is a specific purpose which I don't really understand. Maybe to have two os's? Anyway small hd and no possibility of that."The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso, HH the 14th Dalai Lama

Can we make clear what is what with win98 cd's on ebay. The wording is confusing me. What is OEM and retail? The other sentence: "If you had your original CD, it would say right on the front, "To be distributed only with a new PC"
THE ABOVE "OEM" versions of '98 (not 95) WILL BOOT in a machine that supports that function"
I am really not sure what goes with what. What are you recommending that I get?
I am in Australia by the way and we have our own ebay. Ebay.com.au . There are some good deals.
"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso, HH the 14th Dalai Lama

I'm not sure how much more clear I can make this:
So far as any I've seen, the "store bought" or "over the counter" versions of '98 are nicknamed "RETAIL" versions and NONE of these that I've seen will boot from a cold start---you need a bootdisk, or floppy to start. If yo get a "sealed" "new" RETAIL box, it will come with a boot floppy, which (it sound like) may not drive your CDROM
You will of course have to "build" a custom floppy disk to drive the CDROM
NOW----"OEM" is a nickname used for the version of the CD that would normally come with SOME factory made machines---and these are the ones that ALL will boot right from the CDROM from a cold start. These are the ones that say "To be supplied only with a new PC" on the front, and the only difference OTHERWISE---
is that these so called OEM versions DID NOT get phone support from Microshaft. ---This is no longer an issue, because so far as I know there IS no more phone support for '98. I've never used that (you pay now!!) so I don't know.
There IS however, Microsoft online updates--at least for a little while longer.
While you are on that subject, there used to be a CDROM that Microsoft put out with the updates on.
This gets confusing.
There was a cd which "updated" the early Windows 98 (First Edition) to Windows 98SE (Second Edition) That was NOT an "upgrade" disc
The "upgrade" version of '98 was of course "meant" to be used to upgrade a '95 installation to 98. If you have a '95 CD, you can use it as proof to do a "clean" 98 installation, but that's another story.
My recommendation? Frankly, I actually PREFER the so called OEM versions. The only disadvantage from my point of view, is that you CANNOT easily use the "OEM" CD in an "upgrade" situation from '95.
I see either the listing I posted for an "OEM" example either got posted wrong or else the auction was pulled for some reasonHERE:
http://cgi.ebay.com/Windows-98-SE-Full-Install-Win98-Starts-Here_W0QQitemZ7184961631QQcategoryZ41884QQrdZ1QQcmdZViewItem
is an example of an "OEM" version. The RETAIL versions come in a blue cardboard box, and again, so far as I known, won't start from the CDROM

Well I had a further dig around as I bought a sealed version like you mention for "new pc" some months ago. The cd is gone as I gave it to a neighbour to help me with another laptop. He moved away/broke up with girlfriend and the cd is gone. I have the bootdisk(floppy) still sealed. I can't find my other original cd's of either win98se or win95b. They are gone. I do remember though that a neighbour may have one as I had a copy ages ago of that cd and he may let me have it. I know I even still have the key written down for it too.
I checked out the ebay deals and they are great but I can't make any purchases right now as there is a limit of bank transfers I can do with my bank.
I am understanding a little better about the whole Microshaft mess with windoz. Thanks. Know I know why certain issues happened in the past with other pc's that I had.
I have never done an upgrade as you mentioned so I will stick to clean installs too.
I think this is a situation of getting the neighbours cd as I know he hasn't got win98se installed on any pc so I not crossing any lines there. I know the pc he had is dead. Hopefully I can try his cd tomorrow and I will be back to tell of my sucess....heres hoping :0)"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso, HH the 14th Dalai Lama

Ok, here's a few comments about your last
First, you may not NEED the key for your neighbor's CD---IF your key is the same series on 98 as his CD, you can use your key, that is, for example---
If you have a 98SE key that came with an OEM cd, and that is the same as the neigbor's CD, your's will also work.
However,--if the neighbor's CD is, for example an OEM cd, and yours is
a "retail" key
an upgrade key
a "first edition" keyand quite possibly a few other variables, it won't work.
Also, I believe I mentioned--you can do a "clean install" with an upgrade cd---you simply need a '95 cd to stuff in there when asked for "proof" that you have it, in other words, you don't have to install 95, and then 98
Furthermore, I've got some homemade cd's here, one has BOTH 95 and 98 on the same homemade, bootable CD, and another I've got has BOTH 98 and ME on the same bootable CD. (These were both upgrade editions in the case of the later system on the respective cd's)

Well I wasn't successful at getting the cd from the neighbour. I think he may be biased working for some IT company maybe MS. Anyway something is not right with him so I will skip that option. I know it is the same key for the same cd as i installed it on another pc. Thanks for explaining the above. So the other option is that I get a win98se(as that is what the key is that I have and I found the book that it is pasted on and your right it says for a new pc only). I guess that just getting the cd is even cheaper but ofcourse I would have to get win98se as tht is what the key is for. The floppy bootdisk is for the same version too. It all came together and was new.
So that would be a solution?"The meaning of life is to be happy and useful" Tenzin Gyatso, HH the 14th Dalai Lama

Pretty much exactly correct. OF course you might luck out and find a new "OEM" version for a bargain, and then you'll have TWO legitimate keys.
Good luck, hey, it's a learning experience.

Well it looks like another kind friend may have a win98 cd for me so thanks. will let you know if it works!
