Comment: I am trying to re-install Windows 98SE prior to selling the laptop. The Laptop has a valid COA attached to its base, however the only W98SE disk that I have I wish to keep hold of. Is it legal to re-install the OS on the laptop using my own 98SE disk but inputting the COA number that is printed on the laptop base? I normally wouldn't care but wish to sell the laptop and wish to ensure that I am selling it with a legally licensed OS. Mark

Reply: (edit)If you can use the installation key that goes with the laptop then that would be legal. If the new owner won't an installation disk or a way to recover should the OS become corrupt you aren't really selling them a computer with an viable OS installed. Why not just wipe the drive and sell without an OS or install your copy and sell with that copy and key.

Reply: (edit)The actual disk is not really relevant, but why can't you just copy the disk, and give the buyer a copy of it as well?

Reply: (edit)Or copy Win98 folder from Win98SE CD to the hard disk. Run setup from this folder & there would be no need for a CD.
