Subject: Installing Windows 98SEOS: Windows 98CPU/Ram: 64 RAM |
Comment: I was trying to install Windows 98SE and I received a Fatal Exceptional Error "A fatal exceptoin OE has occured at 00028:C02A0226C in VXD VWIN(05) +00000BF4.The current appplication will be terminated." And it would freeze up after that and not let me install Windows 98SE. I even tried reinstalling the original Windows 98 that I have and received the same Page Fault Error. Need Help! If you have any ideas please let me know. Thank You. Roger M.

Reply: (edit)Hi, i just stumbled across this post, and have a similar problem. I have a computer that had win98se on it, but it crashed and so i decided to reinstall windows. I ran fdisk and deleted the old partition, and made a new one. I tried to run the win98SE setup from cd-rom but it does not work. (i get various messages about missing files after selecting run setup) Have i missed out a step? Thanks, James

Reply: (edit)I don't know what fdisk is, so I don't think I did that. And I know that I didn't format the hard drive. I do know that I tried installing a USB port for my MP3 Player and the computer would not recognize the hardware. Wondering if that would have anything to do with that. Or if I need to update some of my drivers for my other hardware?? Thanks. Roger M.

Reply: (edit)I have one other thing to add regarding a disk read error. When I insert the Windows 98SE CD in my CD-ROM it won't read it right away. I usually have to keep opening and closing the CD-ROM and hope that it reads the disk. Could this be the problem?? I have both the original 98 CD and 98SE CD and get same error on both CD's. Thanks for your help, Roger M.

Reply: (edit)Clean underside of CD's (your drive might be a bit fussy). Otherwise try a lens cleaner kit on the CD drive. Somehow it doesn't sound like the usual symptoms of bad RAM but if you are up to going inside the box there's nothing lost by taking RAM in and out a few times. This clears any oxide off the edge connectors. Derek.W

Reply: (edit)You probly have a CD Rom going bad. I like to install 98se from the HD. I make a startup 98 disk I copy xcopy to the foppy. I boot from the floppy and fdisk and format c: then I MD C:\WIN98 then I Xcopy D:\WIN98\*.* C:\WIN98\*.* D: being the CD Rom after copy completes just do c:\ cd win98 setup advanages are windows can always find it's CAB files with out asking for the CD all the time when you install new hardware.

Reply: (edit)Hi Paul Man after my own heart.
But, This won't get you to the c: drive: c:\ this will: c: But you don't need to shange drive or directory. You can simply: c:\win98\setup [enter] and away you go. While we're at it, your xcopy line can be as simple as: xcopy d:\win98 c:\win98\ M2
