I am helping someone out who has linux Mandrake 7.0 on a laptop, and wants it uninstalled and Windows 98 over top of it. I can't for the life of me figure out how to get a linux machine to boot to a CD. Any suggestions? I fiddled with linuxconf and it didn't work, and now I can't even get linuxconf to run, so changes will have to be made at the command line. Any help would be worth its' weight in gold at this point.

Sincerely,

Frustrated

You are going about it the wrong way. I have Mandrake 7. Start the Mandrake install program. When it gets to the part where it is going to make partitions, use the clear all button to wipe the drive clean of any partitions. After clearing the partitions, turn the power off.

Next boot up with a 98 boot disk. Use fdisk to make your partitions and format the drive using format c:/s or d: whichever drive letter.

An alternative method is to use fdisk to remove the master boot record. fdisk /mbr
Then use fdisk to remove any non-dos partitions. Create a new primary one and then format.

I am of the old school. Do not install anything OVER another even if it has been "uninstalled". It is best to CLEAN install especially with an OS. I do not even buy updates to OSs but only the full install. It causes nothing but problems!

Oh, yes, Linux boots with lilo, I believe. Have not tried it yet but used Unix years ago.
