Subject: Installing Windows 98 on new PC
Comment:

I've recently bought a AMD 1900XP (just the base unit - no OS installed) with 512MB RAM and 60GB HDD's (a 40GB and a 20GB). For some reason, I can't seem to get Windows 98 to install on it properly. I've used FDISK and FORMAT for the HDD's so I'm doing a clean install but the only way I can start-up the PC after installation is via the step-by-step confirmation. I say 'y' to everything up until vfs.vxd (or something similar) then I have to say 'n' after which Windows will boot up as normal. Does anyone know why or how I can fix it please?

The site below may help you resolve. You either have a missing or corrupt device driver file. You may want to use System file checker to help you and replace the file if required.

Vikki, you really should be more precise in your post."vfs.vxd (or something similar)" is really not a lot of help. I don't find a vfs.vxd file on my system.

You could go to Start, Run, type in msconfig and click OK.
On the first screen see if Diagnostic startup is selected.
If so, select Selective Startup instead.
Click Apply and OK.
You will be prompted to restart.

The file is Dfs.vxd (sorry about the confusion) and I have checked msconfig. Selective startup is already selected.

(WINDOWS 98).

DFS.VXD, VREDIR.VXD:

"Start" Menu > "Run" and type in sfc. This starts the "System file checker".
Select the "extract one file" option.
Type in the name of the first file you are missing (with the .vxd extension) and press "start".
A window will appear with the destination and source paths requested. Type in :\win98 for the source and C:\windows\system for the destination.
Repeat the process again substituting C:\windows\system\vmm32 for the destination path.
Do this for every file reported missing.
