Reply: (edit)MS-DOS6 comes with Interlink software, you only need a Parallel Port Laplink Cable and another MS-DOS6 PC/Laptop: http://www.nukesoft.co.uk/msdos/command.php?id=55 See also: http://www.computing.net/dos/wwwboard/forum/14896.html

Reply: (edit)To load Win95 from diskettes you need one boot disk like dos 7.1 boot disk and a disk set of the Win95 cab files.Disk 0 is for all the loose files left after copying the balance from disk one up.Disk 1 is Precopy1 file.Disk 2 is Precopy2 and Cab2,disk 3 is Cab3,Disk4 is Cab4 etc. to the last cab file.Assemble your set and start the setup by booting the computer to a dos prompt.Change to 'A' dos prompt and run setup. You need 27 diskettes for Win95b or Win95c,21 diskettes for Win95a and 13 diskettes for Win95 first ed. Good luck.

Reply: (edit)If you have the floppies (13 in all) you can install from them. Attempting to copy the Cd to floppy and install won't work very well. You'll have no idea what cab files go on what floppy. I'd go to ebay and buy a full set. There are bunches of them listed there. Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Reply: (edit)Copy the files from the CD to the diskettes as indicated using a working desktop computer and it should work just fine. The Windows 95 system used to be on diskettes or CD.Some files, the cab files, are bigger in size than the standard 1.44 Mb diskette allows. You need to format the diskette to DMF size with a program like Superformat. This format is 1.68 or 1.72 Mb in size. You can use one or the other.Good luck.

Reply: (edit)However, if it's the Win95 Upgrade CD, your .cab files will be 2.048MB (no formatting utility will format floppies to that size). If that's the case, you can compress (WinZip) the entire Win95 directory on the CD to a spanned set of floppies, then use PKUnzip on the DOS Laptop to uncompress it to a folder on the HDD and install from there...

Reply: (edit)Jean has a good suggestion. It depends on how valuable your time is.. Personally, I'd just get the set from eBay. :) Life is more painless for those who are brainless.

Reply: (edit)There is one 'possible' problem. You 'might' have to have a Win 3 floppy to prove prior ownership of windows. Check on that before you spend any money. Do yourself a favor BACKUP! Sorry, I do not check for private messages

Reply: (edit)When you install some programs or hardware, you may be prompted to supply files from the Windows 95 setup diskettes or CD.In this case for the laptop you have you will find it handy to keep a copy of the Windows 95 diskettes set for future use.Good luck.

Reply: (edit)Jasa, your best bet would be to use WinZip to span each cab file across two floppies to just move the cab files as they exist on your 98 CD to your laptop's hard drive. Along with all the other files in the Win95 folder on your win95 CD, of course. This only requires two floppies and is FREE. You would then change directories to the folder where you stored the cab files and run setup from there. Any number of file splitter programs could also be used to chop down the size of the cab files to where they would fit on standard floppies and then you just use DOS's Copy file1+file2 file3.cab to reassemble the split files, it's not rocket science and it works good. BUT you are trying to do this on a laptop and laptops often require custom forms of Windows available only from the laptop maker, in this case IBM. There is no way around this problem, off the shelf Windows just don't work too good with laptops, don't say you weren't warned about it. You'll be out a whole bunch of time, effort and saddled with a fouled up win95 install trying to take over your DOS machine. Laptops typically also need to have a hidden partition that holds partial BIOS functions and special drivers like a CDROM driver (if you had one, it would be in there). If your attempts to install win95 foul things up so horrible that you wind up wipeing your hard drive to 'fix' it, you need a Restore CD to remake the hidden partition so your laptop can boot in the first place. Not a fun place to be, so check with IBM for any and all floppies or CDs available for your laptop BEFORE you do a single thing. Lee
