Here is my problem.

I have an HP Omnibook 5700CXT with a CD-ROM and a Floppy. Only problem is, I can't use both at the same time.
I have a Bootable 98 CD, but the BIOS doesn't allow booting from the CD.
I tried copying the 98 boot disk to the c:, but to no avail.

What i need is a custom config.sys, autoexec.bat and the proper version of command.com to start this machine up from the C: drive, and load the CD-ROM drivers.

I have 72 of these laptops. Grrr.

Hi Paige,

Here is a link on how to load Win98 on a laptop with swappable drives. I got this from a regular here on computing.net, Krystyna.

Ouch 72... Thats going to take some time.

boot to your floppy partition and format the hard drive and use sys c: to copy the dos system files to the HD.

Create these config.sys and autoexec.bat files and copy the files I list to the HD from the 98 boot disk.

First files you will need on the root of c:.
oakcdrom.sys
mscdex.exe

Config.sys sould read:

device=oakcdrom.sys /D:mscd001

Autoexec.bat should read:

MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001 /L

If installing 98 that is about all you will need. You may want to add in smartdrv.exe to help speed the installs.

If all of the laptops are the same model you may want to invest in a adapter that will alow you to connect the HD's to a IDE cable.

You could then run the install on one laptop, update it with drivers and such. Pull the drive and connect it to a PC. Ghost the image to a IDE drive. Then it would be a lot faster to pull the drives (if they are easy to remove from the model of laptop) and ghost the image to them.

You would just have to go in and change the Product key and Computer name on each one.

I completely with Johns on using imaging software. It would save you many hours.
