Subject: Installing WIN 98 System Hangs at Installing Devices Prompt
Comment:

Good Morning All. I am trying to install Windows 98 on a Pentium 75 machine, that has two hard drives, a network card, an internal modem and a SCSI CD-ROM. The machine had WIN 3.1 on it. The install runs for about 1 hour then the prompt "INSTALLING PLUG and PLAY devices" appears and the system hangs (I left it for 4 hours at the prompt). Can someone please assist me with this install? Thanks very much in advance. Have a nice day today.

I remember way back when I bought a pentium 75 system ahhh the days of the socket 5!!!! anyhow, my machine was a hot rod at the time and it only had 8Mb of ram, which is not enough for win 98... how much ram do you have?

My computer is doing exactly the same thing. We have tried everything to work around it and so far have not solved the problem. I've got a Cyrix 686 (ugh!) 200 chip, 96b RAM, 8.4GB Hard Drive. We've pulled all the hardware out. Tried different hardware, different drives everything but it always hangs at the same spot!

You will find that it can becaused by a few factors. In BIOS check and make sure that External cache is disabled and also disable any USB enteries in BIOS as well.

these can both conflict with the 98 setup. Installing win98 on a p75 is a brave thing to do are you sure it is hanign and not sure taking it's time to check your system.

Also what is your scsi card you are using if in doubt try an IDE cd drive and see if that works

im addressing both people probs in one here i doubt that the p75 will have usb on there
