Installing win 98 over win me

My friend asked me to install windows 98 over Windows Me on her computer, the problem is, it won't install. After I set the primary boot device to the CD rom and select "Boot windows 98 seteup from CD ROM" it idles and won't go! SOMEONE PLZZZ HELP!! thanks.

Go to bootdisk.com and download their 98 boot disk(free). It is self extracting so you will have to have a blank floppy for it to write to. Set the BIOS to boot from floppy. You will have to format the hard drive before you can install 98. The boot disk will talk you through it. Post back either way and let us know.

Installing over a os it horrable. I installed 2000 over 98 and Its the worst. Just format and fdisk and re-install everything. Its alot better.

You can install Win98 over Me but you have to rename the win.com file to win.old.
But be advised that you will loose the items in your Add/Remove folder in Control Panel.
If you can, back up all your data first. I've done this a few times and had only minor glitches (some software needed to be reinstalled, some shortcuts were invalid) but for the most part all the data and everything else was in place and working.
Again, back up the data. Anything in My Documents or other folders that is important. This of course would apply when ever you are making drastic system changes.

Easiest way i have found to install win 98 over Win ME is to delete the win.com file. Then win 98 should install no problem
