I am trying to install Windows 98 over Windows 95 upgrade, but I am having problems. Windows 98 setup keeps telling me that I need the 'Windows 98 upgrade' instead of the Windows 98 disc I have. I had hoped to uninstall Win 95 in order to start afresh, but quickly discovered this can't be done because I stupidly got rid of those ancient windows backup files uninstal.exe needs. So, should I format, or is there another way to get the Win 95 OS off and install Win 98 fresh without losing my data? Thanks!

You can go to the Cab folder in Win98 and run the [setupnm.bat]. That should do it or if it fails run [oemrnce.exe] If you get a prompt asking you to insert your CD use the Win95 CD until it checks and then replace with the Win98 CD.

and it will tell you what you want to know about using the Full version of '98 over an existing '95 installation..
Ideally it's better to do a clean install, if you're having problems with the current '95 installation.
Having done an upgrade to '98 over a 'sound' '95 installation, and a clean install of '98, I can't say I noticed much (if any) difference afterwards; but as I say, if the '95 is 'flakey, damaged, or whatever...' then better a clean install...

I've haad this problem before. You need to format your C: drive with:
format c: /s
This will save all the system files after the format. Before you do , you need a disk that allows you to boot your CDROM drive in dos. I can easily make this disk if you don't have one.
