I need to know if uplugging the IDE cable to my master HD to install a slave HD will have any effect on the master.

Nope, you can safely do that. Just make sure the connectors are reinserted the correct way. It won't do any harm if you put them in wrong, but obviously they won't work.

Do yourself a favor BACKUP!

I agree with response 1 and 2. On an old computer like yours if you have only 1 drive connected on an IDE cable it must be jumpered as master

Well, if you unplug the cable, the drive won't be detected and your OS won't load. Unless of course, you reconnect the cable. You don't need to disconnect anything to add a slave drive, but I'd go with Secondary Master for the slave as opposed to Primary Slave.

Life is more painless for those who are brainless.
