Comment:

I need to install a 2nd hard drive so I can copy off some documents before I reformat the drive. If I try to boot from this drive (as master) I get a windows protection error, but I can boot in safe mode and see all files I need to copy off. When I connect this drive as a slave my system will not boot. Drive is detected in bios as the primary slave. Should I make this drive primary slave on the second IDE port? My CD-RW is primary master on this port.

You may not have the drive jumpers set correctly.

Sometimes, even IF YOU DO have the drive jumpers set correctly, you may have problems.

Do not try to boot off the drive you are trying to copy.

Easiest way is probably to CHECK THE JUMPERS that the second drive is MASTER, and put it in place of the CDROM drive--the END connector of the second IDE connector.

It would be better to place the 2nd HDD on the 2ndary channel. Make sure it is jumpered correctly...do NOT use cable select.

Yeah, it's probably jumpers. But in situations where I want to copy stuff from one drive to another I'll temporarily disconnect the drives on the secondary port and attach the second drive there.

If you can boot into Safe Mode and see the second HDD, why not just copy that way? Then, you won't have to worry about reconfiguring the cables, jumpers, etc. :)

If you really want to boot to normal Windows, go with the suggestions from the guys.. Put the second drive on the Secondary IDE. My personal preference is to make it a Secondary Master, but different strokes as they say...
