Subject: Installing OS w/out CD-ROM drive
|
Comment: I have a laptop with the usual 3.5" floppy drive, but no CD-ROM drive. My desktop machine has a CD-ROM drive. I want to partition and format the drive on the laptop, which I can do with a 3.5" diskette I have. But then, I need to install Win 98 on the laptop's "clean" drive, using a connection to the desktop so that I can run Setup from its CD-ROM drive. Anyone know of a method to do this? I have a LapLink style, null-modem cable to connect the parallel or serial ports together, but I don't know of a file transfer application that will run on both machines. I have an old version of LapLink, but I think I would at least need to have a version of DOS installed on the target machine. I don't want to install DOS on the target machine if not necessary. Can this be done with Direct Cable Connection somehow? Any ideas?

Reply: (edit)if your desktop computer is using FAT 32 you will not be able to use interlnk/intersvr due to incompatibilities.

Reply: (edit)I would copy the Win98 folder from the Desktop to the Laptop. Then delete the Windows and Program Files folders on the laptop (and any other stuff that you want to get rid of). It's also a good idea to delete all the files in the c:\ root folder. Then boot from a floppy and run the install from the c:\win98 folder. It's practically the same as formatting. You will start out with a clean Win98 system.
