I have compac Deskpro and it restore as well as windows 98 CD, the restore takes through but on poping the Windows 98 CD, it says its copying file/please wait all day long and never completes this, anyy help

Is the Win98 CD a full version or one that came with the Compaq?

If after doing all of the above and, you still have the same problem, try boot with a 98 boot floppy and formatting. if you can't get through the formatting, you may have a bad drive. At that point you may have to test it with the manufacture's utility. larry

Compac computers are famous for having a hidden partition that contains the unique to Compac, CD-ROM driver in it in addition to some of the BIOS routines and data. This hidden partition and it's CD-ROM driver can only be placed on a replacement hard drive by the Restore CD that came with the Compac computer. Once that is done, then you need to install Windows from the other CD that came with the Compac computer again because the drivers are unique to Compac computers. A standard Windows 98 installation CD will NOT work here. Get a new Windows Installation and a new Restore CD from Compac or get a new computer that doesn't have such an intense obfuscation scheme up front. Dell used to do it too, and I've heard the same rumor about some laptops, but I have no proof beyond the above Compac information. Lee
