|Compac computers are famous for having a hidden partition that contains the unique to Compac, CD-ROM driver in it in addition to some of the BIOS routines and data. This hidden partition and it's CD-ROM driver can only be placed on a replacement hard drive by the Restore CD that came with the Compac computer. Once that is done, then you need to install Windows from the other CD that came with the Compac computer again because the drivers are unique to Compac computers. A standard Windows 98 installation CD will NOT work here. |
Get a new Windows Installation and a new Restore CD from Compac or get a new computer that doesn't have such an intense obfuscation scheme up front. Dell used to do it too, and I've heard the same rumor about some laptops, but I have no proof beyond the above Compac information.
