Hello everyone! Hey, look, I want to install my network printer (HP Officejet 5610 All-in-One) on this Win98 machine... The Add Printer wizard detects the printer, but it asks me for a driver! The CD that came with it has this file:
\enu\drivers\win9x_me\hpoupdrx.inf
I opened that, but there were no drivers on the list! Is it because of the SP1 or what? Thanks!
Hi, ADD PRINTER should install the printer on the remote machine and in the process ask you if you are installing a Network printer. You should only have to tell it where the driver CD is and maybe which folder it's in etc.
The problem is a little confusing, to me at least. Is this a new printer that is being installed for the first time on this computer/network? What is the interface connection and do you have choices? Are you connecting the printer to a computer or directly to a LAN? If I understand these answers, you are trying to install the printer to a computer running Win98 and intend to share this printer on a LAN. If this is the case and you have the option of USB connection, I suggest thatis what you use. Before connecting the printer read the installation instructions. The usual procedure is to first install the sotware and at some point in the installation you are prompted to connect the printer. This response is getting lengthy so if this isn't helpful then post back with the answers to my questions.
Q: Is this a new printer that is being installed for the first time on this computer/network? A: No, it's been installed on the WinXP computer and it works perfectly.
Q: What is the interface connection and do you have choices? A: Ethernet port, there are 4 PC's connected to a router (not interested in sharing to one of them right now). And no, no choices... Only if serial cables didn't transfer at .01 bits a second... >:-(
Q: Are you connecting the printer to a computer or directly to a LAN? A: It's connected to a computer, I didn't know you could do the second choice... o_O
The printer can get shared to another WinXP computer, but not on that Win98 one... Thanks!
Still confused about the connection options from the printer but that shouldn't affect your problem. Can the Win98 computer see and be seen on the network?
It sounds like your all in one wasn't designed to be networked. Below is a workaround I googled for. It is from the HP site and may refer to a different model, but the principle is the same.
"After much effort and a little bit of luck I was able to get this to work properly. Here is how to do it:
1) On the XP machine, when you set up sharing on the psc1210 press the button to add additional drivers for other operating systems. 2) Browse to the file hpoupdrx.inf in the /enu/drivers/win9x_me/ directory on your drivers cd or in the downloaded drivers directory and use that as the install file for the additional drivers. 3) This will take some time and effort, but it will tell you that it can't find several files while it is installing and you will have to manually point it in the right direction. I kept a search window open on the entire downloaded drivers directory while this was going on so I could find the proper location of each file that the install couldn't find. 4) After this is finished, it may take a while but the box will be checked by the Windows 98 drivers in the sharing dialog on the XP machine. 5) Add the printer on the Windows 98 machine pointing it to the network printer on the XP machine. The proper drivers will install over the network and it should print the test page successfully.
It is a bit of a nuisance to constantly be pointing out the file locations, but it does work. I was able to get an old Pentium 166 notebook to print to the psc1210 correctly with this method, which would have never worked with the installation CD.
Hope this helps somebody and saves the hours of experimentation it took me to discover it."
I have a Konica Color USB printer that I had a similar problem with.
Installed and attached to WinXP machine via USB 2.
I followed the instructions to install it on the Win98 machine just like those shown by OtheHill in response above this one but like yourself it didn't find the drivers when looking at the WinXP machine from the Win98 machine.
I just installed the printer on the Win98 machine using the printer's CD. Afterward the Win98 machine saw the printer that was attached to the WinXP machine and installed just fine using Add New Hardware.
Note: The instructions specifically stated not to use the Add New Harware Wizard but it was the only way I was able to install the printer and use it on the Win98 machine.
My printer does not support Network printing but does work fine Sharing it on the network. It's configuration software does not work on the WinXP machine if I have it set to sharing but if I need to use the software I just remove Sharing for the exercise.
Hi, Don't remember sharing the printer between XP and 98, but have netted them several times with no real problems. It should work. The same driver is to be loaded to all remotes using the network printer option. Jim
