I have an old PC that is still running Windows 95 and Internet Explorer 4. It will be replaced in a few days, but in the meantime, I need to install IE 5.5. I have all of install files downloaded, and I have successfully used them to install IE 5.5 on PCs running a version of Windows later than Win95. However, when I try to use these files to install IE 5.5 on the Win95 PC, the installer tries to connect to Microsoft to download the needed files (which of course won't work because the IE 5.5 files are no longer available for download). Of course, I don't need to download the files anyway since I already have them. Does anyone know a way to avert this problem?

Thanks,
Burrito

Yes, you need the full installation. The one you have is more than likely just the 500kb install program, which is more than likely obsolete by M$ standards now.

Be warned, it's nearly 85MB long, so a broadband speed connection will be desirable.

Your install might be trying to continue on with a previous installation attempt via MS download site, and the settings are contained in the LOG file.

You could try deleting Active Setup Log.txt and Active Setup Log.bak from C:\Windows folder.

Then try IESETUP.EXE again.

You are most likely missing the Active Desktop Update CAB file as it normally isn't used for 98 and up, but IS for 95 specifically. Thus the illusion that you have a complete set of cab files when you really don't and the why of the installer wanting to go get it?

As the above link shows, ie 5.50 SP2 files ARE still available from MS servers just like the good old days, but it's the only ie 5 up there and still working. The Active Desktop Update cab file has not changed throughout the life of ie 5 so this one will work for all ie 5 versions on 9x only machines.

I might be wrong here but the only time iv'e ever seen the install of internet explorer try to connect to the net is when it wants to varify/check the .crl or class3 software certificate... aka "certificate revocation list" to overcome this I install IE5.0 first then IE5.5 and it will usually install all the way without wanting to connect to the net to check the .crl's authenticity.

Thanks to everyone for the help. I downloaded the files for the full install from Lightspeed, and the install succeeded with no problem. The files that I already had were only around 45 MB as opposed to the 80+ MB set that I downloaded, so I'm not sure exactly what was in the set that I had (although oddly enough, I had been able to successfully install with the smaller set on other machines).

Thanks,
Flying Burrito
