Does anyone on this forum have a LiteOn DVD burner (SOHW-1673SU)?

If you do, would you please help me to install mine in Windows 98 SE?

I know the EZ-Dub feature only works in Windows XP. The Nero files that came with the burner also work in Windows XP.

The Nero people claim that their software will work in both Win 98 and XP. They even supplied the drivers. My burner works fine in XP on another partition!

Yes, I think I'm in the right forum -- for you see I prefer to run Windows 98 over XP. So, here's my problem:

I can't install the drivers for the SOHW-1673SU burner in Win 98 SE. I've tried and tried, believe me. I put the drivers on a floppy in the a: drive. But when Win 98 recognizes a new hardware device and tells me to show it where the drivers are, I point it to a:, but, it refuses to go to a: -- instead it goes to C:\Windows. Or, it will say the drivers don't fit the device if it finally does go to the a: drive.

The LiteOn site gives a whole different set of drivers for Win 98 than Nero does. LiteOn's instructions for Win 98 are very limited, and I can't get those drivers to work either.

I noted that Win 98 SE doesn't list a DVD device in its device listing. Hey, LiteOn and Nero both say it will work.

I apologize for the length of this post, but I don't know any other way to say it ...

Can someone help? Thanks.

Bob

Is the drive showing on the BIOS Post Screen ??

If it is it will be shown as a drive in W98 Device Manger and no drivers are required.

The NERO software will take care of any DMA/ASPI conflicts....

That looks to be a 2.0 USB burner. Are you attaching it to a USB 2.0 port? It may work OK with USB 1.1 . . . or it may not. You should probably check the owners manual on that issue. Also does your packard bell meet the minimum requirements--cpu, ram--for the burner?

Otherwise, you may need to browse through the floppy disk for the drivers. When 98 searches for drivers it only looks in the folder it's currently pointed at. There may be a folder named 'win98' or something similar that would indicated the drivers are there. It'll be looking for a file with a .inf extension.

There also may be a 'setup.exe' file you can run that will install the drivers. In that case you'd normally just close the 'add new hardware' box and then run the setup file once you get to the 98 desktop.

Ooops sorry!

Pent II with less then 256MB mem will struggle. Do other USB devices work ? Are you using a power supply for the drive you will need it ?

You really need an USB PCI card (NEC CHIPSET) added to get the faster throuput.

Also you will need the latest chipset drivers installed, after unplugging the drive and performing a safe mode clean-up.

NERO does not supply drivers, you need the Liteon ones here, usually installed prior to plugging in:

Maybe it would be prudent to read the manual!

Sorry guys, no good news to report. I can't count the different ways I tried to install the DVD burner in Windows 98 SE!

So, I'll just have to use Windows XP to do my DVD burning. XP installs the drivers automatically. Believe it or not, I've already burned two DVD's and my System is:

External Maxtor HD - Packard Bell 1997 - Pent II processor - USB 1.1 Yowsa!

Thanks for your kind help DAVEINCAPS and jessejames.

Bob
