You need a win98 startup floppy...if you don't have one, go to bootdisk.com & download the program that will create one.

After you've created the boot floppy, reboot & go into the BIOS, set your 1st boot device to floppy, save the setting & reboot with the floppy disk in the drive. From the menu, select "with CD-ROM support". Watch the screen to see the letter designated for the CD-ROM...it will probably be " R "

Once you're at the A:\ prompt, pop the Win98 CD in the drive, then change to R:\, type SETUP & hit ENTER. Windows installation should begin....

It should look like this:

A:\>
A:\R:\ [enter]
R:\>
R:\setup [enter]

Asus A7N8X-X

Ti4200/8X 128mb
WDC 60GB

Install your CDROM driver in DOS and then you should be able to run the setup.exe on the CDROM.

If you do not have a DOS CDROM driver for your CDROM then, if it is an IDE CDROM Drive, you can use the oakcdrom.sys generic CDROM IDE driver that works for most IDE CDROM drives.

You can get the generic oakcdrom driver from here. Download it and copy it to your C: drive

Add the fillowing line to your CONFIG.SYS file :
DEVICE=OAKCDROM.SYS /D:mscd001

Add the fillowing line to the AUTOEXEC.BAT file :
MSCDEX.EXE /D:mscd001

Reboot your PC and DOS will be able to access your CDROM.

I am having the same problem I do not think the computer is recognizing my cd com. How do I load the driver if I canot tart my computer. I can start it with a boot disk, but I can not get to windows, I go straight to shut down. Also could you give a little more detail when talking about adding the lines mentioned above. How exactly do you do that?
