Having not used it for a year, and having wiped my hard drive in the meantime, I am trying to reinstall a Conexant modem to use dial-up on occasions. The drivers are apparently installed OK, but when I try to set up using dial-up networking my PC can not find a modem- and one is not listed in Device Manager. I also have BT BroadBand installed. Can anyone offer advice on how to get the PC to 'see' the modem?

Check in your Bios to see if you have an option to enable-disable modem.

It'll only be specifically listed in the BIOS if it's an integrated component - for obvious reasons, add-in cards aren't covered there.

I'm not insensitive, I just don't care.

You should be able to test the modem via the control panel app that was installed when you installed the driver.

Also check the status of the modem in device manager.

The modem isn't listed anywhere in Device Manager. Presumably this means the drivers have NOT been installed properly after all. When I install from the CD I get a message saying the drivers are already installed, and I click the option to reinstall them anyway. The installation always appears to go OK. I'm miffed!

What type of modem are we talking about here, internal, external or inbuilt?

Sorry, I should have been more specific. It's an internal modem in a PCI slot.

Try installing it into another computer.

While it did work a year ago, this does not necessarily mean it still works.

Is it one of those driver setups that want you to install the drivers before you install the modem?

Put the modem in a different PCI slot. Boot up the computer and see if you get the 'new hardware found' box.

Hi,

Go to your modem manufacturer's website (with the computer you are presently using) and download the latest v.92 modem drivers. I know you just got a disk, but just this one time download the latest from the website.

Physically remove all modems from your compute

Go into Start, Control Panel, System, Hardware, Device
Manager....and delete all references to all Modems.

Shut down.

Physically put your modem into PCI #3 (third slot down from the
AGP card)

Boot back up and enter the BIOS setup menu.

If you have Win98, then make sure your PnP is set to ENABLED or
ON.

Save and Exit, then reboot.

When your computer finds the modem, then you need to load those
new drivers you have downloaded..................and then it should go.

Thanks for all the advice everyone. In the end I was directed by someone on another forum to a page in Microsoft's help and support section on their website.

It can sometimes happen that PCI modems aren't detected as modems, and instead the device gets listed as PCI Serial Controller or PCI communications device under other devices in device manager. It was just case of finding that listing and then updating the drivers from my disk. Problem solved. Thanks again!

Yeah that always happens when hardware is installed for which the current OS doesn't have the drivers. I guess we should have asked that first but it seemed you were beyond that stage.
