Hello ... I have this computer at the moment which has windows xp pro but I have another hard drive that I want to install on this same computer as master with a different ide cable , So in other words what I would do is pull the ide cable out ( From the motherboard ) for my xp install and replace the ide cable to another hard drive to install windows 98 , I know I could set it up for dual boot but I don't want that options , What I would like to know is there any ways to reformat the hard drive that I want to install 98 on without having a flop drive ? Is there a way to burn onto cd disk and use it to reformat the drive ? Thanks

( I have partition magic / nero burning program /true image 9.0 )

bootdisk.com has bootable CD images available for download which you can use to burn a bootable cd with the tools you'll need to set up the hard disk.

http://bootdisk.com/

There are other sites as well, a quick Google (or similar) search will turn them up.

Drive size may be a consideration - as well, Win98 has problems with amounts of RAM greater than 512Mb (you have 1024 listed), but all that's required to reconfigure is a quick edit

Probably this:

"Out of Memory" Error Messages with Large Amounts of RAM Installed

Use the MaxFileCache setting in the System.ini file to reduce the maximum amount of memory that Vcache uses to 512 megabytes (524,288 KB) or less.

OR

Use the System Configuration utility to limit the amount of memory that Windows uses to 512 megabytes (MB) or less.

Of course, the first method allows full use of the installed RAM, and is likely the best bet

Yup !!!

Just open the System.ini file in a text editor, such as Microsoft Windows Notepad, it's found in the WINDOWS directory.

Search for the [VCache] section.

Change the MinFileCache= and the MaxFileCache= settings to:

[VCache]

MinFileCache=20000
MaxFileCache=500000

If the parameters are not there, or the [VCache] section doesn't exist, create them.

Most burning programs I've seen allow you to create a bootable CD from a source diskette or diskette image (no actually floppy required)

This site has readymade bootable ISOs of all sorts

If you type system.ini in the Run box it will automatically open in NotePad ready for editing and saving.
