Subject: Installing '98 on a pc without CDD
OS: WIN98
CPU/Ram: P1 (75MHz)
Model/Manufacturer: Toshiba T2130CS
Comment:

Hey,

i have a heap (5) old Toshiba T2130CS Laptops with no OS's on them. i have tried every concievable way to install windows 98 on them (i need 98) but have had no sucess.

one of the ways i was trying was by installing windows 98 in a Windows Virtual machine (which was setup to the specs of the laptop) then copying the entire drive to the Laptops harddrive (which i can remove - then plugin using my laptop harddrive case) but i continued to get an XMS error or something and a registry error, then the pc would crash and BSod with a VFAT error.

i was reading around and came across a page on this forum where a person tried to install NT by copying the NT install files to his laptop drive then running the install straight off the pc. I tried doing this also (copying the entire \win98 off the cd to the HDD) and the setup ran fine until it rebooted (after reboot, it is supposed to run the reg thing and uPnP detector and all that) but all that happens is that it reboots then sits in idle and does nothing...

any thoughts, im almost at the end of my teather here

Cheers,
Invictre

"all that) but all that happens is that it reboots then sits in idle and does nothing..."

Does that mean it boots to the prompt?

HD or FD?

Someone on here spent quite a hunk of his lifetime (with a measure of success) putting W95 together that way. It's the registry entries, or lack of, that screw things up among other things. Your hardware won't match up either.

I wish you well (you'll need it).

To my mind ghost the HD is best but you still have the hardware mismatch.

Even better look around for a cheap W98 CD on eBay.

One thing that comes to mind is that Win98 probably doesn't have a video driver for that laptop. Win98 had a habit of stopping during setup. The screens even stated that if your computer does nothing for along time to restart it. I think it is best to copy the files to a temp folder instead of the root directory.

I thought that was the original statement.

ok, heres how i did it when i copied the install files to the hdd then tried to install it.

i copied the files off the cd to the HDD.
plugged HDD back into laptop
powered laptop with boot cd so it would run the command prompt
navigated to the setup
entered "setup"
ran windows install fine
tells me it needs to reboot
reboots (without floppy disk in)
after POST (Power-on Self test) it sits completely idle (no command prompt or anything).
i reboot the pc with the bootdisk (floppy) and navigate to c:\windows
execute win
it crashes.

NOTE: THIS PC HAS NO CD DRIVE - ONLY FLOPPY AND HDD

Cheers,
Invictre

"powered laptop with boot cd so it would run the" Due to the comp does not have a cd drive, I'm going to assume you meant to say boot floppy.

Use the boot floppy and at A:\ prompt run FDISK select option #4- Does it show an Active primary partition ?

If at all possible you should partition and format the drive on the computer in which it is to be used. Then put it in the other computer to copy the 98 files, then back in the original one.

there is an active partition

cant copy files off the virtual HDD whilst it is running... it complains...
to combat this problem, i downloaded winimage and ran that to open the vhd file then i copied it all out of that program and onto the HDD directly

Basically as you have a floppy drive, use a W98SE OEM boot floppy, a self-creating winimage is available from:

http://www.bootdisk.com

Boot from floppy and at the A: prompt type

FORMAT C: /q/s

Reboot Lappy to ensure you will have a C:\_ prompt, if so you are good to go.

Remove hard drive and put in another PC, copy the FOLDER WIN98 to the hard drive then re-install drive in lappy.

Boot the floppy and navigate to directory:

CD WIN98 press enter
SETUP press enter

...if this does not work you have hardware problem, "MS-DOS" is not as fickle as Windows 9x, as regards hardware.

Hi, Lot's of good info here already. To Recap: All you really need to copy to the HD is the Win98 folder and files. I put it in a folder call WIN98 on the HD. Run Setup.exe from anywhere, Win, Dos etc. Always works here. You will have to download Video, Sound and maybe other drivers.

Good Luck, Jim

Hello there I am Zeeshan Ansari From pakistan!!

The lappy u are talking abt is 75mhz .... 8 mb minimum and 32 mb maximum ram capacity .... i dont think so that u can install a win 98 on such kinda lappy ... hey u didnt mention the config of ur lappy so ??

so here waht i did to it , i copied win95 files(s no. ) from my cd rom and selet all the files and made a archive by rar
and split the files to a 1.44 floppy option and volla !! the files split into 24 compressed 1.38 mb files which i can easily copy into floppy and paste them into the hard drive of lappy and after i copy and paste all the 24 files with a single floppy disk :( which took 1 hour non stop .... and uncompressed em with the help of dos compresser rar32.exe and type there like eg: rar32 e part01.rar and it continously extract the files so now the files are here and i run the setup and it installed the win 95

all the above s---s i share with you cause i tried win97 the upgrade of win 95 and it happened same as mention by you ...

so u can run win95 easily and i think win98 will not run in suck kinda old lappy

tell ya what i am a freak of lappy but the prices here in pakistan is so high taht students like me cant afford it we cant afford single p1 lappy so this machine toshiba t2130cs is the first lappy i have ever got ...

if it sound stupid to u people sorry .....
its my first opinion on any forum

c ya

Agreed, W95 is probably a much safer option for a P1 75MHz.
