Hi,
I have a big problem with my Windows 98 notebook. Even though the ttf fonts seemed to be installed on my computer in c:\windows\fonts, I cannot use them. How come?
To be more specific, I cannot use Arial.ttf (among other fonts) with the Internet Explorer and MS Office (it seems that all programs are affected by this phenomenon). For example, in Word I cannot choose Arial.ttf from the list of fonts altough according to the system it is installed.
Additionally, when I open the font directory c:\windows\fonts, usually a font viewer would display a sample of the font by double clicking on the respective ttf file. But in my case, the computer does not do anything. No display of font samples in the viewer.
Do I have a virus even though my anti-virus scanner does not detect any?

Thanks in advance for your help!

here for our German friends the same message in German.

Hallo,

Try moving Arial.ttf to your desktop from the Fonts folder.

Then in the Fonts folder go to File, Install new font.
Browse to your desktop (doubleclick it's folder) and Arial.ttf should be showing in the list of installable fonts.

Place a check in the box at the bottom to copy the font to the folder.

Select Arial.ttf and click Ok.

Or do it all within the Fonts folder (without copying the fonts to the folder).

If it works then install the other missing fonts.

Bryan

To view fonts, you need to associate the .ttf and .fon extensions with fontview.exe which should be in your Windows folder. HTH.

hi Bryco,
nope, your suggestion does not help. thanks anyways.

hi Marooma,
the ttf files are associated with fontview.exe. but i wonder if fontview.exe itself is corrupted because I double clicked on fontview.exe, but the program would not open... saying something is invalid.
Because I do not have another computer available to test fontview.exe could you doubleclick on this file and try to open it...
does it show the same reaction..in your case ?
thanks for your help

and additional comment.
could it be that my hard drive is broken? I mean some sectors of my HD not working properly which causes this problem of not properly displaying fonts on my computer???
any suggestion welcome

'Something' is invalid? That really pins it down.

"my hard drive is broken?"

I don't think that's it, but run scandisk and see. If you are concerned that fontview is corrupt, run SFC and extract a fresh copy from your CD.

You might also try TweakUI's repair fonts feature.

One simple question. What is your default printer?

Many applications only show fonts that can be printed by the chosen printer. I frequently use Generic-Text Only and I only have Courier available. If I choose my laser printer I have 39 resident fonts plus the all the installed true type fonts.

When I click on fontview.exe, I get a pop-up that says:

"The requested file was not a valid font file"

but it works okay when I click on a font.

Ok - that is something that can be searched out.

Seems to be a solution on this help forum - basically they advise you to run SFC and check for corrupted files - although you should be cautious in its use - some files should not be 'restored' in this fashion, such as Setupx.dll & user.exe

Failing that, they recommend reinstalling Windows into its original directory.

Another site mentions running msconfig to see if there are any applications in the startups that seem related to fonts - if so, uninstall or disable.

Fontview.exe needs parameters...you have to tell it what font you wish to view !
In the RUN box, type
fontview.exe arial.ttf
and then Arial sample will be displayed
etc...

thanks for the advice,
I've run scandisk and also defrag, but the situation is the same. Even though all fonts are installed (at least they appear to be in the font directory) only a few can be used by my computer somehow.

I made another discovery. I started windows in "secure mode" or whatever you call it... that's when the computer boots, I pressed F5 where you can choose if you want Windows 98 to load in a normal way or other way or just have DOS...
so I booted my computer in this "secure mode" and then I checked if the computer could use the ttf fonts. And surprisingly when I opened MS Word and other applications I had all ttf fonts available. I wonder why this is so.
Obviously, this state is not a solution because this secure mode loads only the minimun number of drivers necessary. So therefore, I cannot do many things in this mode.

Anyone has an advice?

I typed into Start, Run:
fontview.exe arial.ttf

and it returned:
"The requested file arial.ttf was not a valid font file".

It does exist in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder.

Interestingly, I then looked in the C:\Windows\Fonts folder and saw that the file name as shown is ARIAL.TTF versus Arial.ttf. It was all capitals. I tried again as such and it displayed the sample just fine.

Bryan

What happen3ed when you attempted to install the fonts from within the Fonts folder?

Also verify that your Fonts folder is in fact located at C:\Windows\Fonts.

"nothing happened"

You followed the following instructions:
Try moving Arial.ttf to your desktop from the Fonts folder.
Then in the Fonts folder go to File, Install new font.
Browse to your desktop (doubleclick it's folder) and Arial.ttf should be showing in the list of installable fonts.

Place a check in the box at the bottom to copy the font to the folder.

Select Arial.ttf and click Ok.

And when you clicked on "Install new font" it did absolutely nothing as though you had not clicked on the Install new font button?

Also verify that your Fonts folder is in fact located at C:\Windows\Fonts.

Regards,
Bryan

dear bryan,

thank you for your continous support.
I did as you said. Yes, I try to "Install font" C:\Windows\Fonts.
I copied a font from C:\Windows\Fonts to my desktop and then deleted the original ttf file in C:\Windows\Fonts. then I try to install the font.
I selected the right path C:\Windows\Desktop and the installation window would identify the font with the right name. I selected the entry from a list. then I pushed "OK" button.

But then it was strange. There was no reaction from the program that the font installation was completed as it would usually. So I checked C:\Windows\Fonts, but I could not find the file in the directory. The font was obviously not installed.

Now, so you get it right... as for the rest of my original fonts. They are physically in C:\Windows\Fonts. I checked it with MS-DOS and with the Windows Explorer. However, again... the windows operating system seems not to be able to load the ttf files for some reason. So I still have trouble reading files in MS Word because the font formatting is not displayed in a right way.

Do we have any real experts in this forum who is so benevolent to give me some advice on this problem. Any suggestion is greatly appreciated!!! thanx

Understanding a problem is the first step to resolving a problem. Thank you for taking the time to explain "nothing happened".

Windows has a limitation to the amount of fonts that you can install and that number on a Win9x system is roughly 1,000.

How many do you have showing in your Fonts folder.
Do note that some fonts are hidden and you must have your Windows/Folder's settings to display all hidden and system files to see them all.
See "TrueType Font Limits in Windows 95/98/Me" for more information in this regard.

Beyond that there are only a couple of things that can be wrong.
See "Missing TrueType Fonts in Fonts Folder or Programs" for more information.

HTH because if it don't then I have nothing more to add,
Bryan

as to your first remark... again, there is no problem with the number of fonts. thanks for the suggestion anyway.
