Hi, I am trying to do a clean install of win 98se on a friends pc. When I get near the end of installation and the pc reboots, it comes up with the error "windows protection error. You need to restart computer". I done an fdisk and format of the partition but still this happens. Any ideas???

Don't know if it's the cause of your prob but the latest pc I put together didn't like my mouse plugged in via USB for some reason...when it was plugged in I also kept getting "windows protection error"...had to shove it back onto the ps2 mouse port to cure the prob. One possibility anyway.

try removing your modem/NIC. the drivers for them is usually the cause although it could be a driver for any hardware device. If it isn't either of those, remove ALL cards EXCEPT the video card and add them back one at a time until you get the error again to see which casues it

I would remove all exta cards (NIC, Sound, Modem, Scsi,...). Use standard keyboard and mouse and try loading. Then add things back one at a time until you find which device is giving you the error. My personel Windows protection error on new installs came with our NIC, but have heard it could be any piece of hardware. Our PC's were Dell and theyended up giving us a patch to replace various files (drivers for I believe our NIC's) that caused the problem. So you need to isolate the device and obtain new drivers for it.
