Reply: (edit)First of all do you REALLY not have a floppy drive, or does it just not boot? Is this a laptop for which you have no floppy, or is it a desktop without one? If it is a desktop, you obviously have posted here from a different computer. Can you either temporarily put the hd of the "target" machine in your other machine with the floppy, in order to copy files to it, or the opposite, can you "borrow" the floppy from your second machine and put in the "target" machine? If you have a store-bought RETAIL version of Whendox, or an upgrade, it MAY WELL NOT be bootable. Some on here insist the "full" version is bootable, but I have one "full" RETAIL version that IS NOT bootable from the CD. As far as I know NONE of the upgrade version will boot, and ALL of the "OEM" versions will boot. Post back here with what it is that you have available. If you have a CD burner in your second machine, and if it has a floppy, you can burn a copy of the CD that you have, and make it bootable. If you can temporarily put the target hd into your second machine, you can make it bootable, copy a simple autoexec.bat/config.sys so that the hd will boot with CDROM drivers, or you can even just copy the setup files to the hd while in your second machine. If the target machine is a laptop (you didn't say!!!!) you could buy a hard drive cable adaptor to allow temp. putting it into your desktop. LOTS of ways to maybe do this, but you have to TELL US WHAT IT IS THAT YOU HAVE!!!!!

Reply: (edit)hello, i have two desktop computers, i don't know abouthe compact disc... its a normal full installer of microsoft windows 98 second edition... and i did make sure the bios was able and set to boot with the cd-rom drive, it worked with slackware linux and not with microsoft windows 98 second edition both computers have no floppy drive, they have cdrw burners and two hard drives, im posting from the second computer that does have microsoft windows 98 second edition installed (from that same compact disc) when i instaled i had a floppy drive. can't i just burn a cdr with something that will make the job of the microsoft windows boot diskette, boot to a command line with cd-rom access?

Reply: (edit)Thing, You can create a bootable CD If you have a Win98 Boot floppy disk and access to a PC with a floppy drive and a CD-Writer. use it to create a bootable CD using create boot CD option in Nero (I use nero others will have a similar option). Nero will use the files and boot information from the floppy and create for you a bootable win98 CD which in effect is the same as a boot floppy except you can now boot it from a CD. ___________________________________________ ☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.

Reply: (edit)Thing, Go to my website (Homepage link) and look up the "Fdisk and Format Procedure for Windows 98". See the format section and in particular the laptop trick titled "Useful Note for Laptop users". See if that helps. ___________________________________________ ☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.

Reply: (edit)Note in that procedure item 2 would be to boot with your boot floppy (which has been converted to a boot CD using Nero) ___________________________________________ ☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.

Reply: (edit)NO, you can run a computer with no floppy. The whole thing started with the fact that your version of the Windows98 CDROM was not bootable. You seem to have solved that problem, but I don't understand why you "can't access your second hard drive." It almost sounds like you had some sort of special partition, or partition manager on there. In case you didn't, you can use the same procedure that you used to create your bootable CD, and also copy to that cd the data from the windows98 cd. In this way you will have everything on one cd, and save wear and tear on your factory CD. In fact, I have made bootable, installale CD's from operating computers that still had the \install or .cab files on there. I just make a boot cd as you did, and copy the folder off the hard drive with all the setup files, plus any other utilities I think I might need, as well as the \command folder. Buying two "junker" computers, I've come up with several versions of Whenox 98 and ME this way. I'd boot up from your CD again, run fdisk and choose option 4 --says something like "view disc partitions." Look for a non dos partition, or anything that is not FAT32. Now that you have Windox installed, I assume you DO have access to your second hd?

Reply: (edit)Thing, I guessed hellp was hello. Glad to to be in touch again. By the way how did you configure that 300 GB hard drive in the end? Back to your post, if you disable the floppy drive/s in your BIOS then the floppy icon should not show up in "My Computer". The reason it shows up in "My Computer" is that although you have physically disconneted it you have not actually disabled it it BIOS. ___________________________________________ ☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.

Reply: (edit)about the 300 gigabyte hard drive, i found some files corupted but it is normal now, still using microsoft windows 98 second edition now with intel application accelerator. about the floppy drives... i did already changed the bios settings to no floppy drives... it displays that in the information table but microsoft windows will still display the icon... theres nothing about floppy's in the hardware profile! and in the "perfomance" tab theres a note "drive A is using ms-dos compatibility mode file system"... the drive isn't even connected!! it looks like microsoft windows is forced to display the a: drive about the cd-boot... can i put all the microsoft windows compact disc inside that cd-r? doesn't nero burning room limit the space to 1.44 megabytes?

Reply: (edit)I am surprised that windows is claiming to have an A: drive and worse still it is operating it in compatibility mode. This when you have disabled the floppy controller in the BIOS. That does not seem to be very satisfactory. However, I cannot shed any more light on that. Maybe someone else out there has some ideas on this. With regards to the boot CD. I have not tried it, but I believe you can add other files and directories (i.e. it is NOT limited to 1.44 MB). The only thing you would need from the windows 98 CD is the win98 directory. The rest is not really necessary. In fact if you read the response from name he pretty much does something very similar to that. ___________________________________________ ☺ When everything else fails, read the instructions.
