2. Copy these four files to the C: drive
a. mscdex.exe
b. atapicd.sys (or your own specific cdrom driver)
c. autoexec.bat
d. config.sys
what dos commands do i need to use?

Those files are on the bootdisk.
At the A:\>type copy autoexec.bat c:
Press Enter.
You should see a message one file copied.
Do the same for the other 3 files.

Ok. That is because they are compressed in the ebd.cab file on the floppy.

The easiest way will be to get the Custom, No Ramdrive bootdisk from the link below.
It does not need to compress any of the files as it does not contain the ones necessary for creating the Ramdrive.
It will have all the files you need.

Custom Bootdisk

You are very welcome. Credit goes to Krystyna who posted this quite sometime ago.

It does work well as I used it just a couple of weeks ago on a laptop I purchased without any software as I had an extra copy of Win98SE.

Post back if you have any further questions.

Take care,
Mesich

Hello again

I have installed the cd rom drivers etc

But when i go to access the cd rom i get this error

Cdr101: Not ready reading drive D

Does this mean my cd rom is faulty?

I have an Compaq Armada 7770DMT

Although i get that error message when the cd rom is in that bay, when the floppy disk drive is in the same bay it works perfectly?

Did you change the autoexec.bat and config.sys files so that the Only lines in them are those listed in the link above?
