OS: Windows 98 SE
CPU/Ram: none
Comment:

i reformatted my HDD. i got a Win98se boot disk with CD-Rom support here http://www.bootdisk.com/original.htm (Windows 98 SE OEM, i also tried Custom, but i needed OEM for CD-ROM support).

i put in the floppy, and it did it's thing. then i put in the Win98se Installation CD. i typed D:setup . and this error shows...

This program requires Microsoft Windows.

now how is that possible when that is exactly what i'm trying to install? i researched the problem, and found out people had to install win98 first, then win98se. but my friend told me that this is a full install of win98se, and it should work.

any ideas?

The only thing I can figure is that you are running the wrong setup.exe The error message you are getting is what you get when you try to run a windows-only program after a dos boot or the win98 startup boot (which is also dos). The win98 setup.exe program runs nuder dos or windows. Make sure that the setup.exe program you are running is the one that's in the same directory as the all the win98_xx.cab files. This setup.exe should only be 6kb in size.

Boot to the boot disk.

insert the CD.

Change drives to your CD-ROM.

do a DIR and see what folders are there.

Depending on the version of the CD it may be in a folder named win9x

You don't have the full install. You have the upgrade!

whether you have the upgrade or full version the setup is the same from DOS. The only Dif is the upgrade will ask you from a Qual product.

I am starting to think you have one of those "Windows 98 starts here" CD's which is just full of junk.

Do a DIR in the win98 directory and see whats in there. if its a win98SE setup disk you should have somewhere around 101 files. in it.

exe files: extract.exe, scandisk.exe, scanprog.exe, scanreg.exe, setup.exe (tried this one), smartdrv.exe, sucatreg.exe, wb16off.exe, xmsmmgr.exe

The setup.exe in the win98 folder is the DOS setup that you want to run. If its giving you a error then there may be a problem reading it from the CD.

It's strange because i've never used a win98 install cd without seeing OEMSETUP.exe in the win98 folder, yet the files you list above are all (i think) the other exe files that are in the win98 folder. Have you tried typing just d:\setup.exe? maybe something else that requires Windows is in the path and thats why you get "This program requires Microsoft Windows" But then again you booted from a boot disk so this is unlikely.

Boot to dos

type in md win98fla

that will make a folder called win98fla

now put the cd in the d: drive

when you are in c:\

type in cd win98fla

that should put you at c:\win98fla

now type copy d:\win98

this will copy all the cab files to that folder

once it is copied just type in setup
and it should do a scandisk and then start the installation.

I always run fdisk then format (when clearing hard drive) before running setup. I haven't formatted in awhile, but I know if the order was wrong, I got various errors.

not sure if you've done this, but that's my 2 cents.

Well this is easy.

If it's an upgrade it'll say 'Windows 98 upgrade' on the disk. You won't have to guess.

As far as I know there were no OEM upgrade versions so there wouldn't be an OEM setup file on the disk if it is an upgrade.

I've never seen it make a difference if you run setup as d:\setup or d:\win98\setup.

Copying the cab files to the hard drive and installing from there won't change the necessity of having a previous version of windows if it's an upgrade.

Download a Windows 98a boot disk and format the hard drive with the following command
format C: /s
and press enter follow instructions and once formatted reboot with the win98se boot disk and type setup.exe and press enter and it should install.

You have a Windows 98se "Update" CD (as distinct from an "Upgrade" CD). You can only use this to upgrade to W98se from W98 first edition.
