Is it possible to install Win98se to a CD-RW? I need it in case my hard drive's copy goes nuts. That way I can just pop in the CD, boot from it, and I'll be able to burn critical files to a cd (I have two CD drives).

I have the InCD packet writing software installed if that is needed...

Thanks!

You can make a ghost image on the cd but probably can't run the OS from there. windows reads and writes during bootup.

Well with one possible exception, if the drive were a DVDram drive with a re-writable disk. The reason is they have routines that allow you to write to it as if it were a floppy drive.

The solution to your problem lies in 'Drive Image' or 'Ghost'. You can make a copy of your system on CDs. If your hard drive dies, you can (from a Dos floppy) copy the system back from the CDs to the hard drive. Or boot from the CD and do the restore.

You could look into Knoppix. It's a linux distro that boots and runs in a cd rom. you can access files from your hard drive and I think you can burn cd's.

What size hard drive do you have?? A better idea would be to partition it and save the files on your partition. Then if your os crashes you can reinstall windows on the main partition.

Can BeOS 5 PE run on a CD? I find it more user-
friendly than Linux.

If it doesn't though, I think I'll try Knoppix anyway.

Thanks!

My 2 cents.

I don't think a copy to a CD-RW will work, because I don't think that it will boot. This is assuming that it is written in with the packet writer.

Your best results will be from some sort of an image. Either from Ghost or Drive Image
or Partition Magic. Remember that you will
be limited to backing up a maximum of 650-700 megabytes if you backup to CD-R.

I limit my boot partition to 1 gig and I make a copy to a 2nd 1 gig partition that is hidden by Partition Magic.

Drive Image creates a bootable CD when it backs up a system. I think Ghost does the same. Both can also do a restore from a CD with DOS.
