Subject: Install Win98 on a FAT32 HD ?!?
|
Comment: ...is it possible ? I have an HD (C:) with win2000/FAT32 and I want to install win98 too. Not consider dual boot at the moment, my problem is: win98 setup needs a FAT16 HD and refuse to install on a FAT32 HD. Is there a trick to avoid HD conversion to FAT16 and/or total re-installation ? Or, is it possible to install win98 on another FAT16 HD (D:) avoiding the 98 request of a primary boot partition ? TIA

Reply: (edit)my question is why do you want win98 if you have Win 2000? However, the only thing you could do that I know of is get the program Partition Magic (trial version available via download at the site) and partition off a blank part of your FAT32 HD (C: as you called it) and format it as a FAT16. Then, install windows on it and register the new partition in the MBR and set it up for dual boot. Anytime you have more than one OS, you're probably going to want dual boot unless you enjoy booting off of floppy disks. :)

Reply: (edit)I'm confused because W98 *will* install to a FAT32 partition. As for not wanting a dual boot right now you are SOL. The files for both systems will want to reside in the MBR at the front of the first physical drive. Most likely when you install 98 the boot manager for 2K will be corrupted and you will need to reinstall 2K.

Reply: (edit)I need to install Win98 after Win2000 only for games speed and compatibility ;) Was too much hoping for a "clean" solution, you both are right, I re-install all (98 + 2000) in a right sequence :( thanks MaZ
