Subject: install win98 on 40mhz laptopOS: win 98CPU/Ram: 40 |
Comment: I recently bought a compaq contura 400cx, it originally came with windows 95 but now I wanna install win 98. I copied the win98 files to the hd but when I run setup i get a message that win98 requires 66mhz and i only have 40. Is it possible to install win 98 on this system.(note: 20 ram,600 hd, floppy , no cd, serial connection ,win98 folder on hd)

Reply: (edit)That's right. Win 98 requires a 486DX2 66 and 16MB RAM as a minimum. Pentium 133 with 32MB RAM is generally the accepted recommended minimum. Your laptop probably came out with win3.1 but will run Win95 OK.

Reply: (edit)There's supposedly a way to hack it into working on something less than 66MHz: "setup /nm" I hope you're a rather patient person... If not, you'll learn to become one after using Win98 @ 40MHz...

Reply: (edit)Try setup /nm "Bypass the internal processor detection to allow Win95/98 to install on machines that do not have the minimum hardware requirements." Even if successful, I doubt if you'll enjoy it. Drop the last year into the silent limbo of the past. Let it go, for it was imperfect, and thank God that it can go.

Reply: (edit)Stick with 95. I run 98se on a 133/32Mb laptop and a friend runs it on a 100/24Mb laptop. These installs will teach patience. You click...you wait; you click...you wait. You get the idea. Insure you have a Win95 disk before you do this; likely you'll want to go back to 95. Skip

Reply: (edit)Thanx for your advice, I know that it 'll run slow but i've tried to install windows 3.11 workstation and this failed. The software completly installed but then whan i started up windows it just kept on the main menu. I couldn't do anything no cursor no working keybord nothing not even ctrlaltdel. So if i could solve this I wouldn't need to install win98.

Reply: (edit)>>>Thanx for your advice, I know that it 'll run slow but i've tried to install windows 3.11 workstation and this failed<<< I'm assuming (possibly incorrectly) that you mean Windows for Workgroups 3.11 and not WindowsNT 3.1. If so, then did you have a version of DOS installed before you tried WfWG 3.11??? And also, if you have a working installation of Win95 (as implied in your first post), why not stick with that (i.e.: your FINAL WARNING from me about how slow a 486/40 will be running Win98)

Reply: (edit)OK, you need to remember that Wfw is not an operating system. The operating system is one of the versions of DOS (5.0, 6.2, 6.22) and Wfw3.11 is installed on top of DOS. It's simply a graphic user interface. Do you have a copy of DOS in addition to Wfw? Skip

Reply: (edit)Yes I do have dos 6.22 and I now have succesfully installed wfw. The only problem I now have is that the trackball isn't recognized and I don't know were to get appropriate drivers. The external mouse (serial) is recogniszed and works well.
