Subject: Install win98 from boot diskOS: windows 98 seCPU/Ram: P 4 512ramModel/Manufacturer: HP Pavilion |
Comment: Hi, I hope someone can help me. I am trying to install windows 98 for my mum on her laptop. I have formatted the harddrive and get to the commnd prompt through a bootdisk to install from a CD. Unfortunately I am using a back up copy of my windows CD and I put all the files into a folder with a very long name (ie "windows 98 se copy for mum") silly me I know!! Now when I do the dir command in my E: drive (cd drive) the directory that contains the setup files is named "windows_" Obviously this isn't what it is really called but i cannot open it now with the cd command. I keep getting invalid path errors. I have tried cd windows_ cd window~1 but I don't know what else to try. Is there another name dos has called my folder and why hasn't it called it window~1. I thought all long filenames/directoried were truncated in this way but when I do the dir command in my e: the directory is named windows_ I would really appreciate any help with this. I know I can just do another copy and call the folder something short but I'm intrigued and a little annoyed that I can't solve this one.

Reply: (edit)Guess what? Windows 98 uses a DOS interface installer, so you can't use long filenames. Copy it over to a 8.3 named folder. WILL POST FOR FOOD.

Reply: (edit)'Windows_' doesn't exceed the 8 characters so you should be able to access it from dos with no changes. From the bootdisk prompt type dir e: and enter (if e: contains the cd). It should show the directory name. Whatever it is just do the CD directory name to access it.
