I have New Win 98,SE, Software,Full version. On my PC now is Win 98 Full version. I want
to install 98 SE through dos,but my Commands d'ont seem to work. My Drive is divided into C, D, E. My Cd-Rom is in Drve D. Can Anyone
help me get the Right Commands to install my Software? I have a New Floppy Boot Up Disk.

Why would you want to install through DOS?
Just load the CD and it should perform the upgrade to second edition for you.

Full version SE won't install over full version FE. SE must be removed first. Meaning full format. Then use win98 boot disk and choose cd rom support. Then type in D:\win98\setup.exe (from dos mode).

I have New Software; Win 98 SE, Full Version.
It must be installed through DOS, because, it's not an Upgrade. My Cd-Rom is in
Drive D. A Full Format is thus Necessary.
Can Someone give me the Installation & Format Commands. The Drive is divided into
C,D,E.

A Full Format is thus Necessary.
It is NOT necessary, though you can do it if you want to.
IF you have data on C that you dont want to loose and cant move elsewhere then all u\you have to do is start with the startup disk, put in the 98SE cd into the drive then type
E:\setup.exe
Note: When booting from startup disks, the CD ROM drive letter will be changed to the next letter (eg. D -> E, E -> F and so on).
You can instal SE into the already existing C:\windows folder. During installation existing files will be replaced with the newer (SE) files. In effect you will have W98SE in C:\windows folder w/o formatting. I usually don not format unless its the last(est) thing to do.
If you anyway want to format:
--boot using the startup disk
--at A:\> type format C:
--after the format is over you will be asked to assign a volume label which is nothing but aname for the partition,
--when you are back to the A:\> prompt, type E:\setup.exe (ofcourse the cd must be in the drive !! )PS: if there is an error saying you need upgrade cd then delete win.com as follows BEFORE starting the installation:
A:\> type del C:\win.comThats that! simple!!
Post back and let us know the results.

Hi Christian, Martin, Terri, Kailas, hello everyone,
As Kailas stated it is not necessary to format the drive to upgrade using a full version.
I recommend renaming win.com instead of deleting it. It is also located in the Windows directory and not in the root directory.
I am confused about the partitions on the hard drive as you stated, "My Drive is divided into C, D, E. My Cd-Rom is in Drve D". Your hard drive cannot have a partition assign drive letter D and your CDROM also be D.
This shall assume you hard drive has three partitions, assigned C, D, and E.
Start the computer with the bootdisk.
Select with CDROM support when prompted.
This will take you to A:\>
A:\>type C: press [Enter]
C:\>type cd windows [Enter]
C:\Windows\>type rename win.com win.old
Since you hard drive has 3 partitions and the bootdisk created a ram drive your CDROM should be assigned G:.
C:\Windows\>type G: [Enter]
G:\>type setup [Enter]
If you watch closely after selecting to start with CDROM support you will see what drive letter is assigned to the CDROM. Substitute the G: above with that letter.
Important:
After the Win98SE setup begins you will be prompted as to where to install Windows. Because the Windows directory already exist it will show C:\Windows.000 by default. Change that to C:\Windows

hi mesich!
yes...a careless typo by me.
win.com will be in the windows dir. And thanks for correcting me...me was in a bad habit of deleting win.com oblivious to the possibility that if the reinstall does not work then i'll have to faal back on the previous OS setup.

I didn't know you could do a full upgrade install of SE over FE. See I'm still learning from everyone here.
Take care all.

Hi Christian, Martin, Terri, Kailas, hello everyone,
Kailas,
You are welcome, hope school is going well.Terri,
I'm still learning with you Terri, nice thing about this place.Couple of things I shall point out when using a Full version to upgrade.
Renaming win.com just get's the setup going as that is where it checks for a previous version.
During the setup it will still detect the Windows directory which is why it will default to a path of Windows.000. If one was to continue the setup this way they would end up with a Windows directory and a Windows.000 directory. This would cause them the inability to launch any previous loaded programs and such.
By changing it to C:\Windows you should not lose any programs or their associations, favoites, documents, mail, ect...
You can also do the same thing going from Win98 to WinME.
The setup will also recoginize win.com on other partitions such as in this tread
on Win98 to WinME using a full version.Haven't seen you around in a while, hope all is well with you and your loved ones.
Best Regards,
Mesich

Haven't been around in a while coz I been working 60 hours a week!! Not my choice belive me, and the money is not so great for it either. Also last week, my pc crashed and burned, big time. No bringing it back. Had to bury it. Broke down and upgraded to a 1Ghz board/processor and a new ATX case. Was running a 550 processor with an old AT case before. Don't know if the 250w power supply killed the board or visa versa, but the new system with a 350w power supply should do me for a while. One good thing, the new board supported my SDRAM. Well 2 sticks of it anyway. Can only use 256 instead of 384, but that's only until I can get (2) 256's. Anyway, it's nice for me to be back. I missed this place.

Hello everyone,
You've been missed, glad to hear everything is going fine though, other than the computer burial.
I've been using a 1Ghz with 256MB of RAM here lately. Works just great for myself.
Very nice to see you back.
Best regards and wishes,
Mesich

Nice to be back. Thanks. And my DSL sure makes things go even better. Man I can't belive the speed I was missing. I wish my computer would of died a long time ago, hahahaha....

What I have done for ever, well since 98SE came out anyway is to copy the cab files from the CD to a folder on the harddrive. Then find and run setup. That way anytime Windows needs to find a file, it won't ask for the cd.
Works for me anyway.
