I have had to replace my HDD and want to install my W98 software to my Toshiba Portege Notebook. However, I only have external floppy and CD drive. When I load with CD drive the device is not recognised. Can anyone tell me how to get it installed?

Well, you need DOS mode drivers for the CDROM, and you'll need to build custom bootdisk (floppy) to load them
WHAT MODEL is the CDROM, and what kind of interface? Have you been to the manufacturer's page of whoever made the CDROM? Have you searched using the CDROM model no for drivers?

You don't have the Toshiba retore software? Maybe the Toshiba web site can help.
Do yourself a favor BACKUP!!!

Essentially, providing you can connect the floppy drive and it's available at boot up... - you preconfigure/preformat the drive (fat32 as it's '98) via a '98 bootdisk; then install "basic" dos 7x; i.e. run the " sys c: " routine from a '98 boot-disk; then install cdrom drivers; then plug the cdrom to the system, access the CD and away you go...
Ideally(?) configure the drive to have both Primary and Extended partitions; format as per norm; run the sys c: routine as above and install teh cdrom drivers. Then attach the cdrom and access the cd. Copy the '98 fole to the Extended partition. Run setup from that location. Then in future if/when you need to access the cab-files (even re-install the OS) they're on the drive...; thus no need of the CD...

You'll find two slightly differing approaches to the same end.

Hello,
I exactly had the same trouble a few days ago as i was proceeding to instal win98 on a old pc.
Try bootdisk.com for a floppy that includes a lot of cd rom drivers.hope that helps
