Comment: Hi all I have a computer here at work that was a 95 but my predecessor upgraded to 98fe with an upgrade disk. Now I find all sorts of annoying little problems (too meany to mention) that aren't critical, but an over the top install would tidy up - only problem is the system wont let me run my 98se over-the-top & I can't afford a format/reinstall as I don't have all the software disks (most of which are industry specific & not supported). Is there a way to install 98se without formatting and guaranteeing I won't stuff up any existing software? Any help appreciated. Drew

Reply: (edit)First, if you have some sort of backup/imaging utility ~run it and backup~ the entire existing partition & O/S. Preferably onto another drive or cd's. Don't image partition to partition. Use partition to file. (Of course ensure your destination is large enough first.) Run the 98SE setup with the ntldr switch. ie; setup/ntldr This will tell setup not to seek an existing or previous O/S. When it asks if you want to install to c:\windows000 just correct it back to c:\windows. There are no guarantees in computers.
