You should upgrade to IE 5.01 (service pack 2). Incidentally, this service pack is very recent (it's only a couple of months old).
I recently reformatted/re-installed Windows 98SE, and decided to try IE 5.01 because IE 5.5 has a tendency to crash an awful lot!!
I've found that with IE 5.01, I've yet to experience 'browser-freeze'.

IE 5.5 is just too 'buggy' for words!

i had 5.5 and had no problems
i now have 6.0 and no problems and 6.0 is better than 5.5
i can't comment on 5.0 or 5.01 never had them went from 4 to 5.5
i am no expert but i would think if you have a stable system 5.5 or 6.0 would be fine
hope this helps

Some people have and some haven't had problems with the install. Might want to check out some of the stuff at about.com
I did the download to ( Upgrade ) to 5.5 and haven't recoverd since! Of course MicroSoft will not support you if you have a bad download and install, so you may want to think about it. My Mother did the upgrade and it works great.
I liked it also until it started to cause crashes almost immediadetaly after I installed it.
Now I have a problem that NO ONE can fix.
If you do it ... Good Luck
