Yeah, at least until this thread gets removed. I guess I should have asked if he had the COA sticker on the case since it has a key printed on it. If 98 came preinstalled it would have had a COA sticker.

Hey, that one was new to me - but I do have 186 others.

Anyone remember a poster called "The Pirate"?

That's probably about what I have. The newer ones I've found are strewn over scraps of paper here and there. I need to collect them all again and put them on a single list. But there's not much call for 98 keys anymore.

Do you have an OEM disk? If you don't know, what does it look like? It should have worked unless I copied the key down wrong or you entered it wrong. Watch the B's and 8's.

OEM and retail disks use different keys, that's why I asked. The OEM disks will say 'for distribution with a new PC only. . .' and have plain black printing on the CD. If it's not that way then you probably have a retail disk.

"If 98 came preinstalled it would have had a COA sticker."

My old Compaq 98 had no COA sticker. I just got a book with the COA on it I bought the PC in Nov 1998.

I have not installed 98 with a key for a long time now. When it asks for the key, reboot into safe mode , use regedit and navigate to the location for the key (I do not remember where) and type in any key with the correct format, all A's will even work. I'm not sure if windows update will pass. If it is not a OEM than there is one other step but again my brain is getting old.

Re TopFarmer's input (#14).

The location of the key in the registry is:-

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\Software\Microsoft\
Windows\CurrentVersion\Productkey

And any key you enter is said to be invalid? Or does it do nothing at all?

I had a hard drive fail once at that particular stage of the install. I didn't realize that right away but I entered what I knew to be a valid key and it said it was invalid. I tried another with the same response. So I rebooted and that's when I learned the drive had failed. But I guess the key formula was on (or supposed to be on) the hard drive and since it had failed I kept getting the invalid key error.
