0kb is a 'good' size for the index.dat.
When mine gets to 1mb I delete it and start all over again. Mine rebuilds itself to 48kb.There are several methods of getting rid of the index.dat file but it can only be deleted through DOS.
Use the 'Site Search' function in the left hand panel to find a bazillion hits on the subject.

If you look, you will find that you have several index.dat files that serve different purposes -- go here for a view of what they are:
http://www.purgeie.com/indexdat.htmThe History file can be useful if you make use of the auto fill function when you type in URLs
The Cookies one can be both a curse and a help -- "good" cookies can make it a whole lot easier to re-enter some web sites.
How big you want them is your call

I know this is a Win9x forum, but on my system, after deleting index.dat files in DOS and then rebooting to WinME, these are the sizes of rebuilt index.dat files:
•Cookies: 32KB
•Temporary Internet Files: 32KB
•History/History.IE5: 16KB
•History/History/MSHist~1: Not yet rebuilt.
As soon as I go on the internet, the second History index.dat file is rebuilt at 32KB and the first one jumps to 32KB.The easiest way to find all index dat files is in DOS (or a DOS Window) type attrib /s index.dat; using dir doesn't work. Finding them in Windows is possible, but tedious.
Delindex deletes index.dat files and other junk files and can even restore saved cookies.
