Respose #1 points to an old post. For an updated, corrected, improved, and downloadable version of DELINDEX.BAT go to http://computing.net/windowsme/wwwboard/forum/19918.html

Enter DOS.
At the command prompt, type the following commands, pressing ENTER after each command, and pressing Y if you are prompted to confirm folder deletion:
cd\windows
deltree cookies
deltree history
deltree tempor~1
exitNOTE: Be very careful, DO NOT deltree the Windows directory, make sure the prompts looks like this:
C:\WINDOWS\Cookies>
C:\WINDOWS\History>
C:\WINDOWS\Temporary Internet Files>
---------------If you just cleared History and Temporary Internet Files and think that's it, go to Windows Explorer and right click on History or TI folder and click Properties. Look how much you still have left. I had a total of 8.13MB in mine.
You can NOT entirely "clean index.dat from within windows. Restart in dos mode and type the following, pressing enter at the end of each line
cd\windows
deltree cookies
deltree history
deltree tempor~1
exitThese files will re-establish them selves so keep tabs on them.

to delete only index.dat files:
restart in dos
go to c:\windows\tempor~1\content.ie5
type:
c:\windows\command\attrib -h -s -r index.dat
(this will uncheck the system and hidden boxes that you see in windows)
Then you can delete index.dat
